Meal Kit Supply recently sent me a box of their MREs to try out and review. I have eaten my fair share of military MREs over the years and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety offered in these civilian MREs.
For those unfamiliar, MRE stands for Meal, Ready to Eat. These meals are designed to be shelf stable, easy to prepare, and contain enough calories to sustain you during physically demanding situations.
Each Meal Kit Supply MRE comes packaged in a heavy-duty outer pouch and includes an entrée, sides, dessert, drink mixes, utensils, and a flameless ration heater. Everything you need for a complete meal is included in the package.
One thing I immediately noticed was the menu variety. There were both breakfast and dinner options included, which is something that was not always common with older military MREs. This variety helps prevent menu fatigue, especially if you are relying on these meals for more than a day or two.
The entrée I tried was flavorful and filling. The portion size was generous and the texture was much better than I remembered from older MREs. While it may not compare to a home-cooked meal, it was far better than I expected from a shelf-stable ration.
The flameless ration heater worked as intended. After adding a small amount of water and waiting about ten minutes, the entrée was hot and ready to eat. Not having to rely on a stove or fire is a major advantage in emergency situations.
The sides and dessert were also solid. Crackers, spreads, and snacks tasted fresh and helped round out the meal. The drink mixes were a nice addition and helped replace electrolytes after a long day.
Calorie-wise, each MRE provides enough energy to keep you going during strenuous activity. This makes them suitable for bug-out bags, camping trips, or emergency food storage.
As with all MREs, weight and cost are factors to consider. These meals are heavier than freeze-dried options and more expensive than basic canned goods. However, the convenience, durability, and completeness of the meals make them worthwhile in certain situations.
Overall, I was impressed with the Meal Kit Supply MREs. They offer good taste, solid nutrition, and ease of preparation. I would not hesitate to include them as part of a well-rounded preparedness plan.
