Combat Ration (One Man) – CR1M
The Combat Ration One Man, or CR1M is a self-contained, individual field ration in lightweight packaging procured by the Australian military for its members for use in combat or other field conditions where organized food facilities are not available.
The CR1M is intended to feed one soldier for 24 hours and consists of two main meals, a midday snack and a number of sundry items.
The CR1M started being used in 1982 and the main meals, diced fruit, and cheddar cheese were canned in the usual (and heavy) tin-plated steel cans. But starting in 2002, the Australian DSTO (Defence Science and Technology Organization) began converting over to the use of retort pouches similar to those used in US MREs. These retort pouches are ultra thin, laminated foil containers that are not only lighter than steel cans, but are also very flexible, allowing for storage in convenient nooks or crannies in backpacks or even in pockets in the soldier’s uniform.
