Wornick Eversafe MREs

As of November, 2009, due to a number of complaints that we have received about the company selling these new Eversafes MREs, we can no longer recommend the purchase of these MREs from any online vendor.

Eversafe MRE History

The Wornick Company is one of the three companies that produce MREs for the U.S. military and was one of the first producers of a civilian MRE. Their original brand was "Mil-Spec" (see old Wornick MRE page) but they stopped producing it around 2001. Wornick re-entered the civilian MRE market in 2005 with their new "Eversafe" brand of ready-to-eat meals. Unfortunately, Wornick's direction on their new Eversafe product was never clear. At first, they released the Eversafes with MRE-like pouches for the main meal. Then a few months later, they switched over to a "Heater-Meal"-like bowl design. Then even later, they switched to offering both pouch-based Eversafes and bowl-based Eversafes. Eventually in 2007, after a couple of years of this schizophrenic product development (and also probably as a result of their filing for bankruptcy), Wornick ceased Eversafe production (again) and closed down their "www.geteversafe.com" website.

But the Eversafes weren't down for long. In 2008, Wornick brought the Eversafe brand back in yet a new format. This new format was a mixture of military-type MRE components and off-the-shelf commercial products. These new Eversafes were also packaged 10 per case (as opposed to 12 per case used by all their competitors). These new Eversafes weren't available directly from Wornick but were instead sold wholesale into distribution and started popping up on eBay. Unfortunately, with three generations of Eversafes out there, it began to get confusing as to which Eversafes were which - the pouch-based meals, the bowl-based meals, or the civilian-parts-based meals.

Then in 2009, a new company <name removed> arrived on the civilian MRE market and contracted with Wornick to be the sole distributor of a revived Eversafe MRE. These new MREs were intended to be similar in content to the other well-recognized civilian MRE brands on the market - the Sopakco Sure-Paks and the Ameriqual APacks. These new MREs would do away with the bowl-based meals and off-the-shelf products and would stick with the well known military MRE components.

As of November, 2009, due to a number of complaints that we have received about the company selling these new Eversafes MREs, we can no longer recommend the purchase of these MREs from any online vendor.

Avoiding Eversafe Confusion

With this new 4th generation of Eversafe MRE on the market it can be confusing which Eversafe meals you see online at places such as eBay. If you are considering purchasing Eversafe MREs (and again, we recommend you don't), here are a couple of simple rules to follow to make sure you get the latest Eversafe MREs:

1. The "Date Packed" should be in 2009 or later. Some sellers will call these "2012" MREs, but 2012 is just the "Inspection Date". The actual date code on the box should be a four-digit code such as "09117" or "9117". The first digit(s) of this code is the year (2009) and the next three are the day of the year. Any Eversafes from 2008 or earlier are NOT the current Eversafes.

2. There should be 12 meals per case. Any Eversafes with 10 meals per case are the older meals and should be avoided.

3. If you purchase through an online store, make sure you pay with a credit card and/or via PayPal. Also make sure you get a firm date when delivery is expected. If you do not receive your Eversafe MREs by this date, file a claim with PayPal and/or your credit card company to get your money refunded immediately.

Menus

A case of 4th generation Eversafes comes with 12 individual meals made up of 6 menus - meaning you get two of each type of MRE in each case.

Contents

The Eversafe meals contain many of the same components as the military MREs - the entrees, sides, crackers, and desserts are the same (packaging and all) as you'll find in a military MRE. The accessory packet is just a little different in that it only contains a napkin, spoon, salt, pepper, coffee, and creamer.

Here's a sample Eversafe meal - Menu #5 - Meatloaf w/Gravy. The contents of this Eversafe vary a little bit from the menus below - an extra dessert was accidently included (no complaints here about that) and one of the other desserts was eventually replace by Nut Raisin Mix.

Eversafe Meal Bag (temporary version) and its contents

Meatloaf w/Gravy and Mexican Macaroni & Cheese

Patriotic Cookies and Almod Poppy Seed Pound Cake

Brownie with Chocolate Chips, Lemon Lime Beverage, and Accessory Pack

Heaters

The Eversafe meals contain a standard military-type flameless ration heater (FRH). These FRHs can be activated with regular water.
