Check out this latest article on MREs - it's much better than that tripe from the Chicago Tribune last week:

Makes a world of difference when the comparisons are kept in perspective. One can't compare a can of Chef Boyardee Spagetti & Meatballs to the food of, say, Mario Batali's Babbo restaurant in NYC and call it a comparison of comtemporary Italian foods.

I know I'm really talking about this thread but since MCIera brought it up here, I figure this is as good a place as any to mention this...

MCIera hits the nail on the head with his comment about comparing a can of Chef Boyardee to an Italian restaurant. And that's exactly what the guy in the Chicago Tribune article was doing.

I can only imagine what the guy's review of a school cafeteria would look like. Would he be amazed that our school children can stomach the "dreck" served there?

Or even worse...how about one of those all-you-can-eat places like Golden Corral (that I affectionately refer to as "feeding troughs")? I can only imagine the scathing review this "restaurant critic" would give a place like that.

Even if he were to compare it to another buffet, it might be something along the lines of Golden Corral not being up to par with the Sterling Brunch at Bally's in Las Vegas without mentioning that the Sterling Brunch is $65! :P

BTW, I like those places! We seem to have a lot of Chinese buffet restaurants popping up around here that serve Chinese food off the steam table and then a sushi buffet at another area in the restaurant; some of them are pretty competitively priced to places like Golden Corral or Hometown Buffet.

I'm not knocking the feeding troughs. The only bad thing about them is that I tend to eat way too much food when I go there. But I always thought the variety of food at those places was better than just ordering one thing off the menu.
