Have any of you played around with...I mean used...trioxane? It's pretty cool stuff. But I can definitely understand what they'd want to find a cleaner-burning replacement. I love that gritty, tar-like residue that you find after a bar of troxane burns - it just screams "toxic waste".
It's funny that they're looking into a sterno-like replacement. I just have images from my old school days of chafing dishes and cans of sterno keeping them warm.
I guess if the gel packs were rugged enough that you didn't have to worry about them rupturing in your pack, it wouldn't be that bad.
Yes, that's one thing I've heard about esbit - that it's much cleaner burning. And now that you mention it, I forgot about all the sooty residue that's left on the canteen cup. Wonderful stuff!

Anything has to be better than the Hexamine tabs we were issued in the Canadian army, horrible toxic stench, blackened canteen cup, a generally disapointing experience. Funny story about hex tabs, they were issued in blister packed cards of 6 blocks, marked "POISON" do not consume, or words to that effect. Trouble is, Poisson in French means fish, rumour had it that some of the French Canadian troops thought it was some sort of compressed fish snack!
