Hi guys,

a couple of days ago I made a bike tour through the "Steigerwald" in Bavaria, Germany . In a little village called "Füttersee" I stopped under a big oak tree for getting new energy with eating a CHERRY NUT CAKE DoP November 1981. Here some photos of my favorite MRE cake:

Wow... 30 years after and it still looks tasty. Just one word: amazing. Pity the same doesn`t apply to some women I know (sorry but I couldn`t help making that joke).

Olli, of course I ate that "delicacy" ! I guess you enjoyed one of those in the eighties when they were fresh, believe me, the taste today is similar, no difference! I do not know the reason for that, I guess those NUT CAKES will be "fresh" forever (contrary to MCI cakes or nut rolles, they get rancid)!

It would seem that as long as the pouch was not accidentally punctured and/or exposed to temperature extremes, it should last nearly indefinately. The brief incidence of MRE-borne food poisonings in the 1980s-early 1990s was due, if I'm not mistaken, to tiny pinholes which occured during the packaging of certain MRE components. Of course I'm sure mreheater72 would have known within about 4-6 hours if there were any quality control issues with his cherry nut cake! lol!

Sorry I forgot to mention, great pics you took mreheater72! I have neither the skill nor patience to do those kinds of pics, and my wife has given up trying to teach me!

For comparison purposes, here's the MRE cherry nut cake my wife and I cooked up last night using the original recipe provided by the US Army Natick Labs:
See the separate posting for the recipe and baking instructions. It does not look the same, but it sure tasted the same.
