Now I know some of you may be fans of these two MREs. This is not meant to be disrespectful, but rather our personal takes on these lesser-loved entrees.
When I opened the retort pouch of the Country Captain Chicken, I was surprised by how pungent the smell was. It was not entirely a bad smell, just overwhelming spice. The chicken “cutlet” contained inside was a compressed / shaped cutlet. In other words, bits of chicken pressed back into a patty.
The sauce has an orange tint to it, with bits of almonds and what appeared to be carrots (but may have been tomato). There also appeared to be beans mixed in with the sauce.
The first bite of the chicken was reminiscent of a McChicken sandwich at McDonald’s. The texture was similar to their formed chicken patties, just without the breading. That however is where the similarities ended. I expected the almond taste to be quite heavy, but it was demurred compared to the overwhelming taste of a combination of tomato sauce, pureed pinto beans, and citrus. It was followed by an even heavier sting of citrus. As my friend Robbie described it, “There’s an aftertaste that really sticks with you.” Whenever I hit the occasional almond they tended to be quite hard and bland.
Now here is my friend Steven's take on the Omelet:
I had the pleasure of eating some kind of “egg” entrée in an MRE from years past. I don’t know anything about what I ate at that time except that the MRE came from my uncle after he was discharged from the Army and I was about 12 years old at the time (1995?). I remember that I really liked those eggs; that they were my favorite out of all the MRE’s he gave me, there was just something about them that I really liked… but what a surprise I was in for, some 15 years later!
The occasion started like many others, opening the container to be met by something that doesn’t quite look like what it’s advertised as… a brick-sponge of shaped yellow mass. However, unlike other recent entrée’s, what followed was not as redeeming as I expected.
The texture was somewhat egg-like, a little airy and spongy, but more processed than a normal egg and it did not help the overall experience in any way. The only way I can describe the flavor is as a powdery nasally sensation left on the back of my palette and top of my throat, leaving the back edges of my tongue with a bland hint of egg and with little to experience in true flavor… almost like my senses were confused and I was tasting the texture…
I tried to spice it up with the included Tabasco sauce, but all that did was make the Tabasco sauce taste bad. The only redeeming quality in the entire MRE was the included bacon hash browns, now that was some good down home cooking!
We both agreed overall, given a choice between these two entrees, we would much rather eat another Country Captain Chicken. While not a preferred dish, it still has much more redeeming qualities than the Egg Omelet.
