New Swiss combat ration pack

The Swiss army, while excellent in many aspects, was rather backwards in others - including combat provisioning. Until recently, Swiss military field feeding relied on the provision of hot meals supplied by company cookers. When necessary, these were supplemented with canned meat, chocolate bars, and hard "military biscuits."

Among the modernizations instituted in 2004 - 2006 was the developement of a modern combat ration pack, the "Kampfkostpaket." This consists of a thin pasteboard box containing 24 hours worth of foods that can be quickly and easily prepared by the soldier. The ration pack is sufficient to provide two warm meals and substantial supplements throughout the day. Swiss troops carry a German-style mess kit and an alcohol burner, and are instructed to boil the plastic tubs or metal cans in the large 1.5 liter pot. Almost all items in the KKP are commercially available items commonly found on the civilian market.

Items in the KKP consist of:

2 x 400-g main meal items, either in sealed plastic tubs or pop-top aluminum cans. Items are: Lasagna, Chili con Carne, or Curry Ragout.

1 x 60-g tube liver paste

1 x 60-g round of processed cheese

1 x 120-g can of preserved meat

2 x 100-g pkgs of bread items, including at least 1 pack of military biscuits; "Darvida" crackers are also used

2 x 50-g bars "Military chocolate" (hard, dark, semisweet chocolate)

2 x 30-g packet of fruit jam

2 x 25-g tubs of Nutella hazelnut spread

2 x 20-g Apple & Grain bars (or other Fruit & Grain bars)

1 x 100-g pouch of dried fruit, raisins, or roasted nuts

2 x 5-g envelopes of instant coffee or 2 larger envelopes of instant cappuccino

1 x 20-g envelope of "Suchard-express" fortified chocolate drink powder

4 teabags or 3 x 20-g envelopes of instant tea mix

2 x 20-g envelopes of fruit drink powder

6 x small envelopes (50 g total) granulated sugar

2 x small tubes of salt (about 2.5 g each)

Also included are 6 pieces of chewing gum, 2 or 3 sets of plastic tableware, a disposable plastic bowl, 3 large paper napkins, a plastic bag, and a couple of individually wrapped toothpicks.

Nice find, Nutella in a ration pack, I like that idea!
Its labeled as Kampfkostpaket II. Does that mean there is a number 1 as well?

The main meal looks civilian as it had a designed outter pack, prehaps you might be able to buy them in Swiss supermarkets like you can with some German EPA meals.

The troops had to buy several stuff by their self and add them to the rations. That why you find all this common, civilan stuff (Nutella, Ricola etc.) in swiss rations:





I read at a swiss blog, soldiers "compalin" about the cans they got.

As you can get most of Swiss ration items in every supermarket, I guess he is sitting in a plane to Zuerich...

Okay, I'm a little confused here. in the earlier postings it was mentioned that Swiss troops had to buy there own meals? Or just buy supplemented canned food for the issued rations? If the Swiss Army is issuing new box rations why would soldiers have to buy extra meals?
