That looks like one of the prototypes before they started putting them in the bags. I could be wrong, though. I'm sure Kman will be along shortly to let us know. :D

Lifesaver has it right about it being a prototype. I saw this same ration in an eBay auction lately. It's closed now (sold for...holy crap!...$321.22) but you can still it view it for a while here:

In case the auction goes away, it just had the two pics above plus this text:
US VIETNAM ERA BOXED EXPERIMENTAL MRE

This very good condition experimental forerunner to the morn MREs is a Vietnam era 1972 dated “MEAL, READY-TO-EAT BACON MENU NO 2” and is complete in its green box. See our other auctions for more WWII and later military collectibles.

WARNING
Obscure Reference:

Prefried bacon? Is that the inspiration for the Bare Naked Ladies song?
A reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy."

I thought it was "pre-wrapped bacon" (seeing as they already have pre-wrapped sausages). :-)

And then what's the difference between "fried bacon" and "prefried bacon"??

I think that is the predecessor to the pre-cooked bacon that we can find in the grocery store these days in shelf-stable packaging under brands like Oscar Meyer.

They charge you more for it (comparable to a lb of bacon) though they've rendered away the fat that you might have been able to use for other cooking purposes. :)
