My first leaking MRE

Post by jubifahrer » Tue Jul 03, 2007 9:24 am

Today i got 24 brown MRE from 1995 and about 100 single items like entrees, candys, heater etc.

On MRE looked like vacuum-insulated :

My friend Hagen alias mreheater warned me one time, if i get an mre like this, something is leaking.

so i went out to the garage to open it..very good idea ;)

Image

it smelled terrible, so i decided to wear disposable gloves. as iam a plumber im not afraid of smell and look, but belive me, be happy that you only can take a look, no smell ;)

i put one item after another out, to find the leak. it looked like the heater was activated by leaking fluid

Image

then i found the leak in the main entree

Image

i decided to open the chokolade bar and the noodles..the looked and smelled very fine, but i didnt want to try them

Image

also i opened one of the tuna with noodles...can you see it ?
:D

bye

Hi Rudi,
so you didn't open it just for lunch on the kitchen table? ...good idea

The cats seem to like it anyway, is it your cats or did you borrow them from Norge (...Viking cats as their masters fear nothing, not even rotten fish :D )

That doesn't susprise me about the vacuum-sealed looking MRE. I guess whatever leaked started getting eaten by some bacteria in the bag and that stuff used up all the oxygen in there. Yuck.

Cute picture with the cats. I'll have to post the pics I took when I tried the German EPa and gave my cats some of the pâté.

Nice story, "Quincy"

If any of the food was rotten, the cat´s wouldn´t eat it. As much as I know, cat´s never eat any rotten food. They smell it long before we can...

Hi Rudi,

as I told you some time ago, I had the same problem with an tan MRE, I think the "Date Packed" was 1996. The smell after opening it was also indescribable, here the leaking entree was the fruit item!

I hope that´s the only one "vacuum-MRE" in your collection! My fear is, that sometime all MREs will end that way !

So long mreheater72

But will produce carbon dioxide, carbonic acid etc...

So the volume of the gas should be the same, isn´t it?!
If you inhale, the oxygen also doesn´t "disappear" in your lungs...

Any other suggestions about the vacuum?

Whats about the "high-altitude-during-transportation" theory?

During transportaion in an airplane, the (outer) airpressure will decrease. Air from inside the bag will diffuse to outside. After landing, the air preassure will come back to "normal", squeezing the bag. This may also blow the bag and cause the leaking... :?:

If the oxygen is being absorbed and something like carbonic acid is produced, is that acid necessarily in the form of a gas...and a gas that takes up the same volume as the oxygen?

We've quickly exceeded my biology skills here so I'm just speculating...

the tuna with noodles was not from the vacuum-insulated mre, it was one of the single 100 items.

the cats are mine btw i belong to the cats, because they decided to life in our "farmyard"

i dont like the tuna with noodles, so i feeded the cats with it. the love it.

bye

Me too with air pressure theory.

I have no evidence - just an idea...
