:::: shruggin shoulders :::: What can I say? I showed them the photo; and, that was the explanation I got. Both of them are in positions that they should know what they are talking about. Heck, one of them orders the rations for the 10th Special Forces Group. So, if anyone should know, it would be him.

I'll leave it to someone else to figure out, then. I'm just going by what I was told by people in the field. When you get the right answer, I'll be watching the thread.

I'd be willing to bet the 'SF' is the type of cardboard, like V2 was...
better suited to deserts, perhaps?

Hey Lifesaver - we're not trying to drive you off. Heck, it sounds like you're the only one with anything close to an official connection. I'm just trying to figure out if there really are "special forces" MREs like your buddies described or if that's just what people assume they are since the box says "SF".

For that guy you know who orders MREs, can you see if he has a special NSN that he orders instead of the regular MRE NSN? That might help.

I took the liberty of looking up some of the milspecs for packing material, such as the cardboard for MRE boxes. The old spec. for the boxes was ppp-b-636, where the big V2s printed on the boxes indicated a weather resistant solid fiberboard box. This spec. has been superceded by an ASTM spec, ASTM 5118. As best as I can tell without actually buying the spec ($41, which didn't seem worth it just for this!), the SF stands for solid fiberboard. I have a new box of MCW's, with the big SF on the bottom, along with the callout for the ASTM 5118 spec. If I can find it for free, I'll see if the ASTM spec. has anymore information of interest. You just can't know too much about MRE's!

Good info, thechip1. Where did you find the milspecs for the packing material? I've been digging around the DSCP site looking for that stuff but haven't found it yet.

I just 'googled' the mil spec number. You can't find all of it for free I don't think. But at work we have a subscription to all the specs out there, some for free, some you have to pay for out of a job (I work for the Navy.) So I just checked there, and you can get all of the milspec, but just a summary of the ASTM specs. If someone wants to add an extra $41 to their income tax this year, I'll buy a copy of the ASTM one!

Solide Fibre
Complies with... ACR-M-026

I checked the page of the manufacturer of the box, International Paper Lancester.
They "say":

Solid Fibre Sheets

That´s it

Special Forces.... Image
Just to increase profit Image of the seller...

Urban legends. I guess they don´t do it on purpose, but if you are with "Special Forces" and will get a box that say "SF" on it - maybe they joked around long enough and now ...

It's nothing. The guy hawking these on Ebay is a moron. I posted a thread about this under Buy/Sell, Ebay asshat of the month award. I had'nt seen this thread before I did so. Reminds me of another ebay ass-wipe from around Ft. Bragg. :(
