One more Canadian ration for me. This time - infamous poutine! (cause of my favourite Canadian pestering me for quite some time).
Checking the contents, I was definitely curious about the tropical trail mix. And why would someone think of tortilla/pb+j/poutine combo? O.O
Let's start with a pb+j tortilla snack made Steve's way and some coffee. Tortillas were ready to split down the fold line but rolling them sideways helped! I think it was a very nice~! snack, and with coffee being really smooth it went down perfectly well. Mind you, I'm not a coffee drinker and I still enjoyed this one.
Tropical trail mix was a surprise. With nuts being salted, it created weird combo with dried fruits. Plain nuts would be just as enjoyable, and definitely yummier than salty pineapple. If we're at snacks, Snickers was just its snickersy self, more crumbly than chewy by now (expired 01/17).
And here comes the star... well, starlet of this menu. It wasn't amazing but now I do want to try the real thing. Good notes about the ration poutine: right kind of potato made the sticks stay as sticks and not turn into a mush, the cheese was rather pleasant and the chicken added that extra bite. Bad points: sauce with a bit sour taste (not spoiled just... I had better gravy from instant powders, this one's taste was just off).
The fruit punch sports drink tasted like generic non-carbonated soft drink and was rather meh, especially compared to some other ones.
Ah, and the dessert! Must admit, I really enjoy the fruity bits in Canadian rations. Feels nice to have some desert that isn't cakes or candy. Not a huge fan of pears (unless still hard) but these were completely palatable and I polished them off without a second thought.
All in all, a very mixed bag. Not a bad one but would I go out of my way to get another one? Nope.

As a Canadian it still pains me to see the absolute sacrilege that is calling THAT poutine. Hahaha

Thanks Dagi for the review, this ration still waits on my shelf. I am always interested in some regional dishes that are in the MREs. It is difficult to make a real good taste in an MRE, but sometimes it is possible (like Polish bigos)BTemple wrote:As a Canadian it still pains me to see the absolute sacrilege that is calling THAT poutine. I don;t expect poutine to be exceptional, as well as hash browns. Nothing can replace fresh fried potato chips,

I can't complain about hash browns - even without the fried crunchy deliciousness it was a rather nice experience. Poutine though turned out more like something from a failed Masterchef re-invention challenge, where someone preserved all the components of the dish but somehow managed to rid them of what makes them great.
