Rancid Pound Cake made me sick, I need help!
So I had opened an old pound cake and taken a bite, and immediately my mouth started swelling. It went down but now, three days later my stomach feels like it killing itself from the inside out. My stomach has never felt like this before, it's awful. Any remedies? Help!!

Killed by rancid pound-cake. I know that will be on my tomb stone.

Do you have known allergies? "Swelling" is usually not a side effect of a spoiled food.Simon2002mre wrote:So I had opened an old pound cake and taken a bite, and immediately my mouth started swelling. How exactly does your stomach feels?
Do you have nausea? Vomitting? Diarrhea? Fever?
Or "just" and upset stomach?

Activated charcoal only works if taken at least one hour after oral intake of the poison. There is no effect if taken later.

Three days later and your in pain. Geez, go see a doctor and bring the pound cake with for testing if you have any left.

Nausea, and diarrhea, no vomiting though, I don't think there is anything else left in me.housil wrote:Do you have known allergies? That's a scary situation, Simon. I've never had it that bad from anything rancid - usually rancid oils give an exceptionally dry feeling to to your mouth & bitterness. Some cases I've had stuff like rancid nut cakes from old MREs swell my mucous membrane slightly and produce a lot of extra saliva - but never super extreme stomach issues days later.
Did you eat any food at a restaurant or fast food place around the same time? I've gotten food poisoning more often in "fancy restaurants" than I have from rations. One time I got some really bad food poisoning from rainbow trout @ a real nice 4 star place next to the Beacon Theater in NY City a decade ago.
Asger nails it - activated charcoal - but also Housil is right too. You have to take that within an hour after ingesting something sketchy. Perhaps your system is very pure and not used to rancid oils - and is going through the ringer right now.
I would say a good option right now would be go to the grocery store and buy a couple bottles of GT's brand "Synergy" Kombucha - specifically one with ginger - Gingerade, Trilogy, or Gingerberry - the probiotics and ginger coupled with the light effervescence will ease your stomach.
Outside of that, only thing I can think of is eat some seriously spicy food - but that might make it worse too if you're stomach is sensitive. Thai food saves me - extra spicy, Thai hot is how I order some good red curry - cures what ails ya! But again, this might make things worse too if sensitive to spicy food.
Pepto Bismol is the next step - it really works wonders sometimes.
Worst case scenario is go to the doctor and get checked out - I hope it doesn't come to that.
Hope you feel better soon, man!

Once all the rancid has gone, your stomach/guts will return to normal duty with no harm.Simon2002mre wrote: Thanks I did all of that, my stomach is feeling better and I'm just waiting it out. Back to reviewing soon. Again thanks for the advice.
