Ukraine Green Bag 24 Hour MRE questions.

Post by fatoutdoors » Tue Jan 31, 2017 6:00 pm

Have a green bag I'm going to review. I don't see that it comes with a heating option, or utensils. Anyone know what the Ukraine army uses for heating, opening, and eating their Rations? I've been checking with lord google and its been sparse.

Sully

P.S. This would be an older ration. Not the new NATO.

I don't know how they do it. I would try heating up in hot water (safe way) or using a portable stove/ESBIT
Have access to: Polish, French, UK, US, sometimes other.

Yeah I figured I'd do esbit, or micro rocket camp stove on low. Am extremely curious though. I know they've been in the news a lot lately and I was wanting to get a better sense of how they are equipped and are taken care of. Or if they are just left to their own devices to figure it out. Certainly not blown away by the contents of the ration. Other people have said they often have to come up with their own enhancements like fresh fruit. I wouldn't think you'd stay healthy very long on this stuff much less in fighting form.

I've eaten both kinds of Ukrainian ration on the market (the newer green bags and the older trays), and both are essentially clones of the old Soviet rations from the Cold War. They contain the absolute basic necessities for life and that's about it, with little regard to exact nutrition or morale-boosting amenities.

The rations used by the soviet union were different from the tray rations. Here's a thread regarding Soviet rations here with some neat info provided by other users. I don't recall or have seen any info about the Soviets using tray rations but I know Russia used tray rations to some exent.

Russian tray rations, I don't have much info on their history and timeline but I have seen blue beret soldiers (Russian Paratroopers perhaps) with green tray rations that were (somewhat) similar to the Ukrainian tray rations. Here is a product catalog of a company that produced (maybe still produces?) green tray rations.

I know more about the IRP used by Russian forces. I believe it was born at some point during the Chechen conflict and it is currently the main feeding force of the Russian military, MVD/National guard, and some other emergency services.
Good luck and may your rations stay unspoiled!

Broke into the unit. Spoon was destroyed. On the super cheap side. Started off with breakfast. Put the video in the video section of the forum. Beef and Rice was ok, Liver spread was ok, crackers were, and that was about it.

While the Soviets didn't issue tray rations, the actual contents are extremely similar.

The new Ukraine "salo" rations from late 2016 come with utensils and cups, but not means of heating.

Similar indeed. I would imagine that up until recently much of the Ukrainian military doctrine was similar/Same as Russian/soviet military doctrines. I am by no means of an expert, just giving my 2 cents.

Cheers!
