Butter
I was wondering about "Butter". Why has'nt the MRE wizard of Oz ever incorporated real butter or a butter substitute into MRE's? One time, when I was eating breakfast in the chow hall at Munsingen (French run Nato post in Southern Germany), there were these huge mounds of real butter on every table, just like salt and pepper. The idea was to take your butter knife(what a concept) and carve off a chunk of the butter to spread on ones toast, or just plain eat it, like I saw my Bn. CO do, just for a joke. Those Frenchies! They did have some real good Brat vendors also.

This is one of the real quandries from a food point of view:
Margarine was created as a long-life/ military butter substitue....but there is no real way of making the volatile oils within butter and marge remain stable for the required shelf life of MREs.
The short-chain esters and lipids oxidise very quickly, resulting in a rancid mess....And because marge/butter is naught but fat there are no things you can add to make it last longer without greatly changin flavour, consistency or food value.
Then add in operational requirements from the Artic to the Desert- in both extremes the marge would have to be a spread not a liquid or solid brick.
A real challenge for science....

The german army (Bundeswehr) had some margarine in it´s rations (EPA´s) during the 1970-80 in a tooth-paste-similar tube.
But they also replaced it. I can remember to it. We had the margarine on the crackers and some jam on it (continetal breakfast
). We also opend the tin food containers before heating, put some margarine in to prevent the food from to burn while heating up on the flame cooker.
