RCIR Menu No 2, by the irrigation canal

Post by Yowie » Tue Jul 19, 2016 10:04 pm

Hi all,
I hope the weather, where ever your are has been better than what I have been putting up with for the last month. It has been raining on and off constantly, and when it is not raining, we have been running around like idiot's trying to fill orders.
It feels like forever since I could get out into the bush for some peace and quiet.
However yesterday, I managed to sneak off a couple of hours early for a late lunch. By the time I got there it had turned into an early dinner, but I digress.
I would have liked to have gone to a new spot to show you guys something different, but due to the rain and the dismal roads in and out of the local state forest, I would probably still be there, trying to McGyver my way out of a massive boghole.
So I went back to my quiet spot by the river (there is at least a sealed road there) and discovered, that it was not part of the river but an irrigation canal

Last time I was here, this was full. I guess with all the rain lately they don't keep the canals full

You could nearly walk across that (apart from the glutinous mud)
However it was just nice to be out in nature.

My early dinner. Beef Lasagne, Curry chicken soup, Chocolate pudding, toffee's and crackers.
This looks good, I also decided to give my new French canteen cup its first run.

Smells good, mild curry

Kind of hard to get rid of all the lumps, but I always struggle with powdered soup.
This was good, nice warming soup good flavour.

Heating up the main on the stove. Looks good smells good.

Ready to eat
The Lasagne was a bit bland, I added salt and pepper, but it really could have done with a little more flavour. It reminded me of frozen lasagne from the supermarket.
All in all it wasn't bad, just lacking in flavour, which came as a surprise for me. My RCIR experience's so far, the meals had great flavour.
Maybe I just miss my own homemade lasagne :( . I can't cook it currnetly because my camper doesn't have an oven. When I get the chance again I will post it on the home cooking thread.
Finally, dessert....

Chocolate pudding
This was a really nice chocolate mousse type pudding, good flavour, just not big enough.

I didn't realise til I hit the bottom, that it probably was meant to be heated. (if you look closely you can see chocolate sauce)
I think heated this would have been fantastic. But out in the field it may have been a bit of a trial to eat. Getting it out of the tin heated would be difficult.
All in all it was a good meal. Like my last RCIR I had I found that while the sweet crackers were ok, that salt ones had a funny taste. The date on the box is 05 Aug 2013, so technically it is out of date, but we all know how long rations can last.

Has anyone else seen this with RCIR crackers?

Thanks for the review.

Two weeks ago I made a little hiking with my girlfriend and we brought an RCIR (BBD 2018) with us, they had the same crackers/biscuits as on the picture. The crackers were buttery, even the salted one tasted a little sweet. But I had the same complain with them: they tasted a little funny. Somewhat stale, but they were fresh. I cannot explain it.

I found the dessert and it should look like this: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xgm855 ... 991_webcam (Different packaging, same company and product)
But I have no idea how should get the cake out of the can :D

Those RCIR crackers can be funky sometimes! Not sure why, could be heat stress or?... Once upon a time I had about 12 RCIR's, Expiration dates from 2011, 2012 and 2013. About 1/2 of these had bad crackers, they actually tasted like cardboard!

@ Housil. Since we are in winter the bugs aren't too bad. Earlier this year the little black flysheet were bad though. Good call on the pudding :)
