How do you get you`re MREs ?

Post by Imon » Sun Feb 13, 2005 9:00 am

Hello @all,

first of all I have to say sorry for my englsih, its not the best, Im from Germany.

for my question:

sure, its much more easy to buy MREs in the internet/ebay or buy it in an army store which sales these US MREs (not so easy in Germany,no army store has the US MRE,just sometimes German army food called EPA  ) ,
but I prefer to go out in training areas and look for MREs after a finished training/manouver of the US Army or if they moved from one place to another. They often throw away MREs and sometimes the MREs arent opened or just one or two items are missing/were eaten.
Its always great and funny to search for the MREs and Im much more happy to find MREs or items than to buy it in internet.
Searchin for MRE is like a hobbie !

Hi Imon - welcome to the forums!

That's a pretty good story about going out into training areas and finding discarded or unused MREs. That reminds me of a story from another forum member who's in the National Guard. A while back, someone came by his unit with 70 cases of MREs that they were just going to throw away. They were leftovers from the hurricane relief from the past summer.

Wow...to be in that right place at that right time!

But alas....no such luck for me - I'm stuck with finding all my MREs on ebay. Sometimes, though, it works out that you might buy one case from a person on ebay but then you can start dealing with them on the side.

Yeah, but its also a little problem. I go running in the so called "Sandflora" near Mainz, former home of the Lee Barracks. This used to be a US military training ground, and you still find the ripped open plastic bags and pouches all over the places, in trees, under the brush.

Sidenote : The german EPA comes with a plastic bag who is considered as a trashbag, to clear all the tin foils, trays and remainings ...

I`ve never bought any MREs at Ebay, maybe thats the only chance for some people to get the MREs or items of MREs but if you live near a training area its more exciting to go out and look for the MREs!
I just would buy special MRE at Ebay, like LRP,RCW,MCW or HDRs but they are very rare to get.

In the training area Hohenfels/Germany you can always find MREs after a manouver/training if you come to the right time at the right place :D

However, I like the MREs and Im always surprised what i find when Im "on searching"

This is how I come about three cases. My seller listed 1 case, and with the purchase of multiple case, the shipping and price per case come down quite a bit. Once I can veryify all the meals are a ok and good to go (some confusion on my part as to when they were made, see my earlier post about this) then I will buy more. At $3.25 a meal (shipped), I dunno how it could be cheaper.

Hi,

in one week a big manouver of the US Army ends over here.
And that means : MRE :D
As I wrote in my messages before you always can find single items, unopened MRE pacs and with a lot of luck full cases in the woods and fields after a training term which were thrown away by the soldiers.

I one week I tell you all my hits :P

Hey Imon - if you have a digital camera, it'd be great to see some pictures of what you find in the field!

Zeiti, I thought the German gov't really cracked down on how the US Forces now leave any of their training areas, due to past abuses? I know there were areas that cost millions upon millions of DMarks to clean up to to the complete disregard the forces used to have with any trash and environmental damage they used to do; and after a very lengthy court battle the US Forces were compelled to clean up their training areas, bases and any bases they were closing down?

Has this basically been gradually ignored over time and they are just lapsing back into their old behaviour? If so this would be too bad, as Germany doesn't have a lot of land in the first place, nevermind space to just abuse.

Hi mirage,

you`re right there is a program of the US forces that they clean up military training areas after a manouver or training term, but that works only reduced.
I`m talkin about the german training area called "Hohenfels"and this is not just a area with a few woods and hills, its an area of about 35 square kilometers, its not possible to clean up every inch of the area after a training, you need thousands of people which clean the area and I think that will raise the costs exorbitant.
The military also introduced trash tons in military areas but only a few in a big area and so many trash bags,MRE pacs and so on wil be thrown in the woods and area.

By the way, we have the EURO since 3 years, the D-Mark is history :!:

@Kman: Sure,I will make some photos and show it over here when I make a lot of hits, unfortunately they just have standard MREs and no RCW/MCW,though we have tons of snow and arctic weather over here :(
