Help me pick an MRE for my first review!
Hey all!
I'm going hiking tomorrow and I love having MREs as lunch on the trail. I've already had two (spicy penne pasta and beef roast) which I made review videos/pictures for, but something kept coming up that presented a problem. The pictures didn't actually take, the video was cruddy, or (in both cases) I just didn't like the food. This time, I've scoured heaven and earth (read: eBay and the local surplus store) and found a couple of meals that tickle my fancy. I think the third time's the charm, but I'd like to know what the target audience (you awesome people who appreciate MREs) would like to see.
The meals I have are--
Menu 21: Lemon Pepper Tuna, stripped of the cobbler (date code: 1038)
Menu 4: Pork Sausage Patty, Maple Flavored (date code: 1005)
A homemade MRE using scavenged MRE beef stew and the cobbler from the tuna meal
A homemade MRE featuring tuna
A homemade MRE featuring salmon
And in case anyone wants to factor in the conditions of the hike, here's the forecast--
Mostly sunny
High: 68°F/20°C
Temperature around the time of the hike: 55°F-66°F/13°C-19°C
Winds: NW at 10-15 mph/9-13 knots
If there are any other questions, please ask!

First of all, welcome to forums.
I voted for the salmon as "fish" is pretty rare with any rations.

I'm in for the Salmon, too.
I've got a couple of pouches of the salmon and tuna from the big-box stores that I haven't worked into a menu yet. I'd be interested to see what you do.
Also: love to know where you're going...
Alsoalso: that 2010 Maple Sausage Patty looks to be one of the best breakfast menus I've seen. I can tell you the blueberry granola is really worthwhile, and the Mapletop muffin and apple fruit butter sound like they be pretty hot stuff as well. If you can find a spare hashbrowns, they are great with the maple sausage patty... They soak up all the juices really well.

Re: Help me pick an MRE for my first review!
Hey, thanks guys!
I'm still deciding between a couple of places for the hike. I'm not sure if I want to take one of my two standby trails or if I want to try somewhere new. We just got a ton of rain, so now I may try a place I haven't been in a couple of years that has a nice waterfall when it's been wet enough.
Right now, the salmon has the lead, but even if that changes, I'll be sure to post a review when I do use it.
I'm almost out of my real MREs, so I've either got to find the time for another trip to the surplus store or start getting super creative with my homemade ones.

Welcome to the club and we share a common interest. I also use MREs and other military rations for Hiking, canoeing and camping meals.
I have eaten civilian retort pouch Salmon on the A/T trail for a lunchtime meal, so I know it's full of nutrition.
Same with Tuna, so I would like you to review Military versions of the same product.

All reviews, especially ones where you don't like the food, are welcome and encouraged.

I will go with the salmon. Is rare , so that's why I voted for it.

Ahhh... there may be a problem with the vote thingy.
Three different posts say they voted for the salmon, but there only two votes recorded...

I think some people may have posted opinions without voting or arrived after the poll closed. I ate the salmon and am working on writing the review, but since there was apparently quite a bit of interest in the maple sausage, it will probably be my next review.rattattoo wrote:Ahhh... there may be a problem with the vote thingy.
