I saw this posted on BushcraftUSA and the poster didn't go into detail about it's origins.
I'm guessing it isn't US issue as the only canteens I've ever seen are the standard 1 QT canteen and the rectangular 2 QT canteen.
Whoever this is seems to have put one one of those "canteen into camelbak" conversion kits on it.

FDSman,
I have one of those canteen cap converters. I picked one up in 2003 in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO for a standard 2qt canteen. It's very handy and inexpensive. The only drawback is that you have to blow air into 1/3 of the canteen and then turn it over to get the air into the bottom then get it right side up thereby puting upward pressure and using momentum to drink the water. I think a company called SPEC-OPS made the cap system. The company is kind of innovative in that they make good quality stuff, for not a lot a money and it lasts. They're still around IIRC.
As for the bladder, I've never seen that one before but it looks like a 3L rectangular version, similar to a camelback.
