The technology is the same as a Heater Meal, there are a few companies producing self-heating meals, the ones for the retail market use the salt-water activated heaters. The heaters themselves are often coming from HeaterMeals (as do the ones that are used in MREs.) Though, that being said, it should also be noted that the Chinese are now producing FRHs both for military and retail usage; self-heating foods were quite popular during the Beijing Olympics.
LaBruite is a New Jersey based company that specializes in the production of Kosher shelf-stable meals both for the retail and military markets. Their products are approved for use in the Kosher MREs from DOD. They are not owned by HeaterMeals.
As for the technology itself, I put up a posting a while back (a few years?). Basically anyone can assemble the same kit using one of the Hormel entree items (Compleats, Dinty Moore, American Classics, SPAM, etc.) and an FRH. Just activate the FRH, put the entree film side down on top of the FRH, then put it into a suitable container to retain heat, and wait. It will take a bit longer to heat through since the military FRHs are smaller, and the tray entrees are thicker than an MRE foil retort package. Give it a good 15-20 minutes, maybe more.
