Wornick's "Eversafe" meals
Well, I think the pouch idea might have been the way for them to introduce this to the market without a lot of time spent in the design and packaging development. They already know how to do the pouches, so just print a new clear pouch with the new brand Eversafe.kman wrote:. . . they have two menus listed - one for Eversafe meals with BOWLS and one with POUCHES. I wonder why they're doing it that way? You'd think it'd make more sense to just stick with pouches.
When I talked with the Wornick contact, she told me that the bowls were the way to go -- it makes it more consumer-friendly. Also, adding menu items such as Mac & Cheese and Spaghetti will help ensure acceptability with children. Plus, the menu list with the bowls includes a breakfast meal, not found in the pouch menu list.

I can understand what they're saying about wanting them to be more consumer-friendly. But they already have spaghetti entrees for the military MREs and Mexican Macaroni and Cheese (just remove the Mexican part and you're set).
I'm more in favor or pouches over bowls - here's why:
1. They already have pouch production facilities in place. Making bowls means new production lines, production methods, etc. It would seem that this would make the Eversafes more of a pain in the ass to produce which would make Wornick more likely to cut their production if they don't sell as well as they had hoped. Look at it this way...if they produce 1 million bowls of Eversafe food and don't sell them all, they're stuck with that inventory. But if they produce 1 million pouch entrees that are already being used for the military MREs, there's little chance of that inventory going to waste.
2. Won't bowls take up more space in an MRE bag than a pouch? Won't it make them more bulky?
3. I want military MREs (or something just like it)! Since I can't buy the military MREs officially, if Wornick produced something simliar for a reasonable price, I'd buy more of those to stock up for emergencies. The Eversafe pouch meals seem like a good military MRE replacement. But the bowl meals? Nope...if I want a "HeaterMeal", I'll buy one of those - but if I want an MRE, I'd prefer something pouched.

Oh...and one more thing about those bowls...they violate one of the primary rules of MREs - don't look at what you're eating! You're not supposed to see it - just cut open that pouch, don't let too much light in, dump in your tobasco sauce, start chowing down, and don't look too closely at what's in your spoon.
With those bowls, you're eye-to-eye with your meal the whole time - scary!
