Tray Ration LEMON CAKE WITH WHITE ICING DoP 2010

Post by mreheater72 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 5:56 pm

Hi guys,

last weekend I opened a tray ration LEMON CAKE WITH WHITE ICING DoP December 2010 :D . That kind of cake is regarding to the NATICK UGR LIST issued frozen to the troops :!: . As I bought it on a German flea market in Mai 2011 is was not frozen, so I refroze it for storing in hope that it had not gone bad during the time is was not frozen :) . But see the following pics:

Opened tray ration, I need a caliper to pull the lid from the plastic container :!: :!: :!: , very good glue/seam

The taste: Very fine, a little bit moist, not too sweet with light lemon flavor :D . What a pity that the icing could not be used :( , so the cake perhaps would have been still better :), although it was very fine without icing, too. I was happy that it was not bad/molded, even after it was stored an unknown time unfrozen :!: .

Nice review! Are you sure that is meant to be frozen? What I read indicated it to be introduced in 2008 for the UGR H&S or Heat and Serve. The UGR Heat and Serve rations do not require refrigeration. The frozen UGR rations I have seen come all in one with the icing / toppings already applied.

I don't think this was issued frozen either - the ones I've seen like that are not issued in this kind of tray at all, but I'll let someone else with more experience chime in. I thought this type of polytray was used for shelf stable items only.

Hagen, I realy *love* the tray rations so I´m happy about every review.

I´m sorry the icing pouch had two holes
Usually icing is made from powdered sugar and lemon juice. So let´s do it the Mc-ration-Gyver way  Let´s give ration sugar and hmmm... the lemon beverage powder a try to make a canteen cup cookery like icing?

Thanks for the review and detailed pictures.

You can always make the icing, like for mre birthdays.

MRE Sweet Icing:
-Coffee creamer pack
-sugar pack or two
-little water

1.Mix all 3 (use less water than you think you need to start,a few drops even, you cant take it back out )
2.Then let it sit a few minutes (it makes it much better and is an important step, stir every so often.)

Its done when the ingredients have combined well and doesn't look like rough mix of powder and water.
After you have made it a few times you can adjust water for how thick or thin you want it.

Or

MRE Flavored Icing:
-Dairy Shake of flavor wanted
-water

Basically the same as above but don't need sugar and you get flavors

Or

MRE Mocha Icing Variant:
Use chocolate dairy shake and add a touch of coffee and tiny pinch of salt
Ration Reviews: USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, China, Spain, Russia, Lithuania
Wish List: Rations from anywhere I haven't reviewed yet!

Sorry for confusion  , I guess you are right. But I will always stay careful with UGR cakes; I had a lot of those in the past that had gone bad/molded :!: (packed in transparent foil :) ).

Thank you very much for the icing recipes :D . If I will have in future a cake with holes in the icing pouch, I will try one of those recipes :) .
