And no, I don't mean the lunatic or racist variety. Yet, I also don't mean the more politically correct and socially acceptable euphemisms like "prepper" or "preparedness monkey." ( )

The root word of "survivalist" and "survivalism" is still "survival." The fear-mongers cannot change that no matter how hard they try.

"Let us tenderly and kindly cherish, therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write." ~ John Adams

Most of my library is filled with books on survival, wild edible and medicinal plants, as well as the old ways of doing things. guess i have had a "survivalist" mindset most of my life and it has come in handy on more than one occasion. and i have found that having a M.R.E. or 2 in the truck or the pack can be very helpful or even give you an edge in a situation. :D

I always go prepared..

I store shelfstable foods (suprising on this forum..), always carry a "well filled" first aid kid in my car (backpack), have some rope, knife, pocket knife, etc.
As a back up I also have my rifle, but don't expect it to be of use. If something bad happens here, most likely it will be a chemical catastrophe or an natural disaster (forrestfires, floods, mudslides)

Zombies, the chinese and the communists aren't comming to town, so I think im pretty safe..

The rifle is actually not part of my survival kit.. how stupid it might seem to some americans. If the shit hits the fan I will rely on my service rifle instead of my private XR41.. I'd might use it to get back to the base, but that's all.
Sure, someone may one day kill me with my own gun.
But they'll have to beat me to death with it because it's empty.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

I think a lot of my Countrymen might be over-romanticizing the gunfight aspects of certain survival scenarios that may or may not befall our great country in the future.

If you hunt or spend a lot of time in the woods, it's a good idea to have an excellent First Aid Kit (FAK). Hemostatic Powders, sponges or gauze is a great idea, too. That's because if you get shot by accident by another hunter or something like that, there is still a great possibility that you can be taken to a top-notch trauma center and that type of advanced FAK can indeed save your life.

But when you talk about certain survival scenarios...I think a lot of these guys expect to not only survive, but win, countless gunfights under extremely adverse conditions...but if they do get wounded, they can pour all of the QuickClot in the holes they want to, who is going to really patch them up?

So, while I'm 100% Pro-Gun (Pro-Concealed Carry, too...) in my country, including owning what have come to be known as "assault weapons..." Or even fully-automatic weapons, short barreled rifles and shotguns and suppressors, I don't fantasize about scenarios like some folks do. The absolute NIGHTMARE is being in a situation where you have to get into a gunfight and you do NOT have a trauma center available to you. That should be avoided at all costs but it seems as though a lot of short-sighted people are running full-speed into that reality for themselves should anything bad happen.

Ultimately, if you need a firearm to save your life, I'm all behind that as well. But it seems that the more you read online about "survivalism" and firearms, the more the thinking man comes away shaking his head in disbelief.
