heating kits
Ok, maybe I said that the wrong way. Maybe the Dutch military contract with German stove producer to make and package stoves for them. But maybe they asked the German company to put the stoves in a Dutch-labeled box. The NSN would stay the since since the contents were the same, you'd just have a box in a different language.
Or maybe there's a Dutch company that just copied the German stove and did such a good counterfeiting job that they copied the NSN, too. :-)

That's exactly what I thought; note, also, the 'MVD' marking on the stove. MVD = Ministerie Van Defensie, Dutch Ministry of Defence.kman wrote:Maybe the Dutch military contract with German stove producer to make and package stoves for them. Here's what the fuel looks like - two sealed 'bubble' packages:

Re: heating kits
Hi I'm Cal & am new to this forum but I thought I could clear up some question posed in this thread.
It says Hexamine because that is what it is, ESBIT is just a brand name. The green tube pictured is US hexamine for the old WW 2 to Vietnam issue wing stoves, they contain 6 hexi pellets and can also be found in white.
The reason both ESBITs have the same NSNs is because they are the identical item made in Germany for both countries.
Germany have been using these cookers & fuel since the 1930s and were the first country to issue an NSN for it, when the NATO Stock Number system came into use.

Re: heating kits
I agree, it's the same item. The military doesn't use the NSN as an order number, they simply order it from the producer.
In case of an conflict, where the NSN comes in handy, they simply get the same cooker, but maybe with a different name on it. The handling, size and weight are not altered in any way.
And the Dutch military doesn't really buy second hand items, only some airplanes (C130) and armored vehicles. (Leo1, M113, M109) as far as I know.

Sure, someone may one day kill me with my own gun.
But they'll have to beat me to death with it because it's empty.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

Re: heating kits
Everything is ordered by NSN, in fact all you need is an NSN to get what you want I was in a Armoured unit but everybody in my unit had Airborne knives because we ordered them with the right NSN, [NSN ????-21-???-???? _ Knife _ qty 50] it was that simple.
NSNs are issued by the country that first brought the item into their supply system, if a 2nd country adopts the identical item they use the NSN that was 1st issued for that item.
Another example would be Canadian CRS canteen cups (both the flip & butterfly handles) are identical to US cups thus Canada does not issue a 21 NSN for them, we just use the US issued numbers NSN 8465-00-242-7843 flip handle & NSN 8465-00-165-6838 Butterfly handle.
So the 2 Esbits being identical (except the MVD & Bund markings) use the same NSN issued by Germany. While the UK tommy cooker while only similar has its own number issued by the UK MOD NSN 7310-99-708-8451. This cooker is identical to the Australian cooker so uses the UK number rather than issuing their own 66 NSN.
