As far as I can rember from the time that the tin cans were issued, they came indeed in separate shipping cases.
I guess the pouches are also packed in separate cases. Unfortunatley I haven't seen since a very long time any packings, so it's only a guess (but a good one).
Dutch Army rations are very difficult to get. The Army has a very strict policy not to sell the stuff to civilian. Has to do with liability when people would eat too old rations and get sick. The Army food also doesn't meet the civilian standards of consumers info on commercial food, which is regulated by law.
I am continuously looking for good, priceworth Dutch rations, but I seldom find one. At the moment one guy here in Holland is offering 4 Arctic rations for about $120 total, excluded P&H. Well, in my opinion that's way too much for the stuff.
On the salt sachets is indeed printed that in case of emergency salt can be used to brush your teeth. Brrrr...
If you are only looking for good tasting ration with many variation, than stick to your MRE's and IMP's!
But if best taste is not your single interest, than you should really try all the other nations rations. Uhhh.. like I do...
