German_Epa,
Hi, I have some of those cans from a collector in my area. He has the cans that have and do not have the wax paper cardboard outer sleeve. He sells them for $5.00 a piece. Good selection.

The orginal American Indian (or is it Native American this month?) pemmican consisted of dried meat (usually buffalo) pounded into a powder and mixed with crushed berries & crushed nuts, then bound together with rendered fat.rationtin440 wrote:My father-in-law once told me that when he was a B-52 tail gunner, their rations often included cans of pemmicansomething about raisins and mystery meat held together with grease just does not appeal to me.
The military version (Survival Pemmican) from the 1930's - 50's was made of finely minced dehydrated apples & raisins mixed with crushed nuts & rendered fat.

Here In Oklahoma I have friends that still make it the traditional way with shredded dried buffalo meat mixed with the tallow and fat with nuts and fruits. Is good but you have to have and adquired taste for it....
About the survival rations ( I call them tincans) i have some from the 90's with the fliptop. I opened one the other day and I have been eating those bars foe a couple of days now. The oatmeal bars and the granola bars tae great for a 20 year old ration...

Hi rt
Is this what you were thinking of? Notice it mentions its SAC use, and the use of pemmican. i think thats SAC official survival ration, 50s - early 60s.

Yes biscuits, that looks identical to what I recall my father-in-law showing me, thanks! If you could find any info, it would be cool to see what Victor and Vulcan crews had as well. During my years of military service, I recall seeing a NATO-made training film about RAF Vulcan crews getting sick from food poisoning after eating flight rations---it was purely training, Soviets hitting an RAF base with bio-warfare in the food chain--anyway, the flight crew were eating some kind of mystery meat sandwiches and had tins of fruit it looked like.
