Funny story. Reminds me of the guys in Iraq who'd heat up their canteen cups with their tank's exhaust:

I have the lid of a .50cal ammo box.
Now I just need to get that M1 Abrahms...
Re: Funny MRE story
In the 'Good old Days', folks used to heat their C-Rats by dropping the cans down the exaust stack on a truck.
Idle for 5 minutes, and then rev the engine to pop them out.

I thought they also used to carve off chunks of C-4 and burn it like trioxane to heat up water.
Re: Funny MRE story
Yup, just a pinch will do, but it can also burn a hole thru your canteen cup if you use too much...

When we had to drive far away (couple of hours), we putt the rations some where in the engine bay next to the exhaust pipe to heat them up.
Also I remember after finishing the crackers first, use the can fill it up with Diesel and heat up the entree this way. Thats before M1 Abrahms was in service, still the M60 was in use as MBT

Re: Funny MRE story
Interesting stories....My grandfather used to tell me that back in WWII ,in in north Africa they used to fry eggs in the topside of their vehicles and tanks due to the desert heat.
Simply clean the area needed, put some oil ,wait to let get hot and then crack the eggs open and presto, fried eggs....
Necesity is the mother of invention.
When I was in college back in PR, I used to warm sandwiches in my old pickup, a 1984 Mazda B2000. They came wrapped in aluminum foil so I used to stick them inside the hood close to the engine, there was this little space close to the windshield wiper motor. It kept them warm for my long trip from my house to my college campus in the capital....
Also they use the detcords to chop down trees.....
Peace!

Re: Funny MRE story
I've used det cord to clear trees. In one memorable case (during my training), I actually "launched" one. It was a lift off that would have done the space shuttle proud. The demo man that was training me told me to put the "extra" det cord around the tree. Apparently, there was a bit more "extra" than he had thought. The end result was that the tree in question went straight up instead of merely being cut down. I cannot personally attest to where it landed. There were reports of a tree matching its description destroying a parked VW, though. I have no personal knowledge of this, though.
