Hotlinking morons on eBay

Post by kman » Wed Dec 03, 2008 5:58 pm

I finally got sick and tired of this one jackass seller on eBay hotlinking to pictures on mreinfo.com. So I figured if he's going to directly link to my pictures, I may as well put whatever text I wanted on those pictures:

Maybe you can "watermark" all the pics here like:

or  if you can change the stolen pics into "any" text, why don´t you make a real bad pic making eBay to punish him? (a porn pic, some racial ...)

Did you complaint at eBay about him?

I actually do watermark all pictures that are hotlinked - if they're hotlinked, they get "mreinfo.com" added to them. I usually don't mind but this one guy on ebay just doesn't catch the clue and he caused some confusion for me today because of this - so that's why I changed this one particular hotlink pic.

Thanks for that info. I have a "dont buy" list of sellers and then a "do buy" list. This site has really helped a newbie like me.

I've seen a lot of people on ebay that copy the whole page with the whole mre info page on the main site. They even include the pictures and all of the text without mentioning they took the page from this site.

Tonight I discovered at Ebay Germany:

this is MY picture of mine EPa leicht at MY basement!!!

As this guy didn´t hotlinked, but copied my pic into his auction, I complained at Ebay and requested them to remove my pic´s asap.
I also wrote that guy a note, he lives just 10 min´s far from me...

Gaz, no, we don't have the option to watermark photos here. Besides, that would only help if you actually upload the files here to MREInfo. Some users like housil prefer to use their own external services so I wouldn't be able to control that.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of watermarking. It's fun to do in the case of when someone is hotlinking photos from my site but in general, I don't mind if people copy the photos and use them - but linking back to me is always nice.

My main issue with hotinking is that if I see a photo I'd like to use for the website and I contact the owner of the photo to use it and he says "yes", then it can be a painful process to get a non-watermarked photo if he doesn't have the original handy.

No offense to housil, but watermarks like the one he has above on his photo are very distracting to me and I think they degrade the quality of the image. I'd much rather see a watermark on the top of bottom of the photo - out of the way of the actual content I'm trying to see. Of course, then it would be easy to crop out the watermark. :-)
