I finally got hold of some current MREs. These were packed in May 2008, and I managed to get both A & B cases. Check them out:
I've only opened the B case so far but it looks like all the MREs in there have the new bag designs. I also haven't opened or eaten any of them yet but first on the list will probably be the Spaghetti because it has a couple of new items:
Spaghetti w/Meat Sauce
*Baked Snack Cracker, Hot & Spicy
Cheese Spread
*Chipolte Snack Bread
Cherry Blueberry Cobbler
*=new items
Pictures and details will follow. :-)

It appears they're still field testing the new bag design.

How's that? The 2008 MRE specs specify these three bag designs as the final designs.

Since this 2008 design includes all three designs for a new bag, the 2009 will have changes possibly to one consistent pattern or a box meal like the FSR. This is an unprecedented level of troop feed testing, evaluation, and implementation. Exciting times ahead.

That article is talking about field testing individual MRE items for the 2009 menus. The new bag designs aren't being tested - they've been included in the contract specifications for the MREs. Here's the relevant quote from the web page where I consolidated all the redesign info:
http://www.mreinfo.com/us/mre/mre-bag-design.html
In 2006, the
{US Army Natick Soldier RD&E Center} began evaluating new graphic designs for the MRE bags. They started off with 18 new designs and weeded that list down to 9 designs. Further review brought the list down to 5 designs (as seen in "Design Testing" below) and those designs were "field tested" with soldiers to see which ones they preferred. Natick finally picked the three best designs and decided to use all three in the new MREs.
In the
{2008 Assembly Contract Requirements}, the DSCP specifies these three new graphic designs for the MRE bags. Each design will be on four MREs in each case.
This isn't to say they won't change their minds in the future about which designs to use. But they're not being tested anymore - they're in full production.

What exactly is a "chipotle"? Is that like one of those mesquites or chutneys?

After the Chicken and the Egg, came the "Omelet"!

Hot Stuff on the menu. Chipotle is like Mexican Jalapeno. Hope they didn't get the E-Coli in the Bread. I guess that would explain why the Feds rushed down to Mexico when they suspected the source.
