Cooking: Simple, Fast, and Easy

Post by jfko6 » Thu Jun 12, 2008 7:40 pm

Just like to share with you a real time saving, little mess, cost saving method of cooking.
Right from the can. Most of the time we cook with pots and pans and especially we use our microwaves.
But a tried and true camping method works just as well if not better.

Caution

Contents are HOT. Use safety gloves. Contents can easily spill. Test with an empty can first. The can should be large enough to cover your range top stove grill w/o slipping.

For this meal I used a can of Green Giant Nibblet corn and a can of Cream of Mushroom with Roasted Garlic. The soup heated in less than a minute. I gave it about two minutes and it was done. I added a little more water to the can of corn. The corn takes a little longer to heat. In this case however I was using the smallest range out of the four that are atop my stove. In each case, the burners were turned all the way down to low flame.

Green Giant

Once complete you can add your contents to a bowl or cup. And add your favorite condiments. Salt and butter goes good with corn. Or, you can eat directly from the can (in an emergency).

Quick, simple, fast, and its done. Little mess. Little clean-up. Easy to recycle.

While it's not as fast, the tried and trued safer method is to dump the entire can(s), unopened, into a pot of boiling water and let it sit for about 10 minutes or so. In the spirit of the theme of this site, those instructions were printed on the entree cans of C-Rats. This same methodology of heating works with retort foods as well, like the microcup meals, Hormel Compleats and any of the other trayed entrees, and of course with retort pouches, like those found in MRE entrees. And you won't need gloves, though some sort of insulation like a cardboard carton or even a doubled over napkin will be all you need to prevent burning. Additionally, you don't have to worry about the solder melting if the can that you have uses any (not common in today's cans.)

I tried setting a coffee cup on my stove's burner the other day - not to warm it up - just resting it there for a moment. My burners look just like your and my (empty) cup kept tipping over. I must not be so good at the balance thing...I can only imagine what my stove would look like if I tried this with a can. :-)

Good tip, but probably would't fare so well on a flattop range

This thread, and your post reminds me of when I was a kid, about 8 years old. I thought I'd do something nice for my mom and heat up her mug of coffee that had gottne cold, on the stove. Glass mug right on the burner. Didn't take long before a mess was created, and a lesson learned.
