Why do you buy mre's?

Post by SaTrinxa » Mon Feb 18, 2008 4:11 pm

I notice that someone here has a very nice looking display cabinet with military ration items in it - it look great!

So what's the motivation for people here buying them? I've eaten a fair few British rations in my time and I buy them for emergency use really, I do eat a few when outdoors to keep my stash well within use by dates, I replace when required etc.

So, what's the reason for buying them, collections, taste tests, emergency rations?

Yes. :-) All three.

I buy them to collect them...mainly because of the info I try to put on the the site. I taste test them because I'm curious - there's just something intriguing about those little military-green unmarked pouches of food.

And finally, for emergency rations. Because you never know when you'll need an emergency source of food.

Here in Florida we expect the occasional hurricane.

Many years we don't have any hurricanes and those that we do have are mostly noisy but harmless. But there are a few exceptions that bring down the electrical lines and bring everything to a stop. For that reason, I have several cases of MREs stashed along with water and a small generator.

My original reason was just to have some emergency food around, just in case. But, after tasting a few MREs, and finding them pretty good, I'm starting to think of them as just food. My original plan was to eat one a month, and buy a new case once a year to keep me in stock. But that plan morphed a little, and now I eat two a month. (And I've already had my two February MREs -- drat, no more till March!)

So -- originally I intended to hoard them. Then I started eating them. And I fear... I might be tempted... to collect them. Horrors!

So far i just have them as emergency rations. I would collect other rations but so far i've only bought MRE's. Enough to keep me alive for some time. :D

I have MRE's for emergencys mostly but I have two young son's (five and eight) who love the stuff and we often just take a few and out in the backyard and have a great time heating them up and eating the MRE's together... kinda like a quick campout... we also try out different rations from around the world and that's fun to try different stuff. My wife says I'm just as bad as the boys when it comes to rations

I buy MRE's for several reasons. like the most of us here I guess.

* For emergency reasons. (we live nearby a river that tends to flood every now and then. Occasionally the water level reaches a point were were stuck on an 'island'. Fortunatly that doesn't happen very often. five or six times in my life (28 yrs) of which we had to evacuate three times.
(The "disaster reason")
* for a collection
* to eat them, yummie

+1 on pretty much everything.

I started because I lived in Houston after we had just had another hurricane, which while it didn't do us any real damage, it certainly flooded a lot of the city. Then I found this board and realized there was more to it than just emergencies. Now I collect them if possible, but if I get something unique I'll typically eat it. I've had an RCIR which I ate 1/2 of so I have some stuff left, I have 5 out of 6 EPAs left, 1/2 a case of IMPs, a C case, and probably 6 regular cases worth of other stuff varied years. I just enjoy buying them and letting other people try them, I get most of my enjoyment from that and getting something new. Plus I believe strongly in preparedness. If you aren't prepared for an emergency, you're no better off than the rest of the sheeple.
