5 minute meals

Post by SpikNik » Thu Jan 31, 2008 7:13 pm

I was on the MREinfo homepage, and I noticed an ad on the right for Chef 5 minute meals. They would no doubt be difficult (and expensive) to get to Europe, but after a quick read they seem quite good.

I just wondered if anyone had any experience with them.

They're from a Canadian company and are along the lines of the original HeaterMeal concept. They're sold in a local drug store chain here, called Long's for something like $6 each and contain a 9oz entree in a tray, a salt water activated FRH element and a larger tray to contain the heating element and the trayed entree during the heating process. I think it also includes a spoon and maybe condiments. The entree trays are rectangular, but otherwise like the Hormel Compleats (and the HeaterMeal trays) in packaging/processing technology.

I've tried a couple of them. I think I saw them on sale for $2.50 each a couple of years ago and picked up a few. I might even still have one in my stash at home.

But MCIera pretty much said it all - they're very similar to HeaterMeals.

Hey `MCI, is the entree selection the same as the Hormel "Completes", or are they a whole different menue offering?

You can view their available entree selections at http://www.dbspecialtyfoods.com/c5mm_Entree.htm
It is pretty limited and certainly not as diverse as the selections from Hormel. Realistically, it is far more cost effective to assemble your own with a Hormel Compleat menu item and a FRH, supplying your own heating vessel. The manufacturer's shelf life on all of those trayed menu items is about 18 months and you can usually get fresher selections from the Hormel items right off of the supermarket or Wal*Mart shelf. That also includes the Taco Bell packages of trayed entree items that you'll see in the stores.

Big thums-up for those Taco Bell meal packs...I thought they'd be crap but they were actually pretty tasty!

Heh, I was going to ask that, thanks kman, I'll pick some up, I love those compleats, they're not great but they're handy.

Edit: and the wife will let me buy them.
