British 24hr Ration - Menu 19 - Part 2 (Dinner)

British 24hr Ration - Menu 19
Muesli / Leek & Potato Soup / Chicken in Yellow Curry & Rice

Big thanks to steve1989 for sending me this UK ration - it's a February 2015 date of production! I think this might have been the first time I ate two full meals from the same 24hr ration in a single day. It's definitely the first time I've done it and done reviews, so enjoy!

See Part 1 for an overview of the ration as a whole, as well as a list of complete contents.

Part 2 - Dinner

Continuing with the theme of choose-your-own-adventure, I put together the following for dinner:

Dinner Items
  • Chicken in Yellow Curry & Rice
  • Sticky Toffee Pudding
  • Fruit Puree (Apple/Raspberry/Blackcurrant)
  • Chilli Beef Jerky
  • Nuts Cocktail
  • Orange Flavoured Drink Powder
  • Instant Coffee - Douwe Egberts
  • Beverage Whitener
  • Sugar
  • V6 Strong Teeth Gum

Dinner - Prepared
This was all so good! Breakfast was a tasty meal, but dinner put it to shame. The jerky was excellent - just enough spice, and great with the nut cocktail. After the lighter breakfast I was glad to get a protein-heavy dinner today.

The orange drink was vaguely similar to Sunny Delight. My other choices were the blackcurrant drink and an apple flavored energy drink. I chose the orange because I was going to have the fruit puree with this meal and didn't want to double up on either of the other flavors. Speaking of the puree - I liked it. It was similar to Zapplesauce, but with more fruit flavor.

The main course - Chicken in Yellow Curry & Rice - was a nice mild yellow curry with beans, carrots and potatoes. I ended up adding in the green Tobasco for the second half - that was definitely interesting! The curry was always there to finish out the aftertaste and I think they went well together. It was the only thing in the ration that would make sense with hot sauce (as far as I could tell) so it seemed worth the risk

For dessert, I had the Douwe Egberts instant coffee with one cream and one sugar along with the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Delicious as a description just falls woefully short of what I want to get across here. This was a sort of sponge cake or thick sweet bread soaked in a toffee caramel sauce. I heated it up with the entree and that was definitely the right decision. This was so amazing that I'm sure I'll be wishing for another for years to come.

I finished it all off with another variety of the V6 gum. Thanks for reading - I sure enjoyed this one!

I have been so excited to know what you thought of this Ration - but had no idea you would put together what has to be one of the most absolute beautiful photo sets of a Ration I've ever seen of it!
Geez, I gotta find more Rations for ya!!

First off, brilliant choices for the dinner. Absolutely appropriate, and did I mention awesome pictures? ;)

That chili jerky has to be some of the best beef jerky ever made - Beyond the Beaten Track makes some absolutely fabulous packaged food products and that jerky is no exception. I mixed mine with the nut cocktail too! I have pictures buried somewhere.. hehe.

The orange drink was a wise choice pairing with the puree - and won't conflict on flavors for your palate. It was kindof like a slightly watered down orange juice to me - so your description comparing to Sunny D is right on the money.
Puree is a nice mild blend of fruit flavors and I hadn't thought of Zapplesauce, but that is a great comparison! It's like a more exotic Zapplesauce in a cute little pouch.

Ya know, I did not add the green Tobasco to my Chicken in Yellow Curry & Rice. Had mine on it's own. Brave choice, and makes sense! Certainly added a new dynamic of flavors, I'm sure!

Hmm you had the Douwe Egbert's brew with the Sticky Toffee Pudding. That pudding is what made me think "Oh wow, Ruleryak would like this Ration because he liked the Halal MRE Butterscotch Pudding!"
It was quite the upgrade from that pudding, this one is exactly how you described. Such a delicacy here in the US to actually find something like that. I think that makes two of us wishing for one for years to come. :)

This has to be one of the most impressive overall photo sets and reviews in Ration reviewing history. Thanks so much for sharing!!

awesome second review, great job on the photos. :D

So how was the coffee? You really didn't say much about it, but you do have me wanting to find one of those puddings now.

You're right! I skipped over the coffee - probably because I messed it up. I put too much water in the mug and thinned it out too much, making it very weak and unpleasant. I'd have to emphasize that it almost certainly wasn't the coffee's fault.

Great review and the desert looked like something from a mess hall, not out of a field ration. I thought the Off The Beaten Trail company makes fine products from what I have already sampled. Did they make the Jerky also? The photo of the Curry looked like a decent meal and not like rice paste
I also agree with you on the dental gum, I liked the V6 dental gum. It was far better than the Chiclets you get in U.S. rations.
I thought it actually did what it was designed for as well.

Thanks for posting the review
