UN Individual Food Ration 24H, Western Menu A

Post by michel2827 » Tue Aug 14, 2018 10:48 am

Hi Everyone,

i'm gonna review my 24 Hour UN Individual Food Ration for you guys and i want to give Delicious a second opinon of this ration, because he already has reviewed it. I got this ration on ebay for about 25€ a while ago. I will do this review in steps because it is a lot of food. I will start with breakfast tomorrow. Today i show you the content of the Ration.
So this UN 24 Hour Ration comes in a big green plastic bag and weighs about 1,4 kg. The Best Before Date is 05.2018.
Image

on the back we have a short content list.
Image

First thing i noticed, when i opened it, was the fishy smell. That must have come from the esbit fuel tablets. That's reminds me of the french RCIR rations, they have the same smell.

This is the content.
At first we have a plastic zip lock back, some plastic cutlery (Knife, Spoon, Fork) and a Item list with nutrition facts on the back.
Image

the little stove with esbit fuel tablets and matches comes in a little zip lock bag with instuctions printed on. It also contains two water purification tablets.
Image

let's get to the food. We have 3 mains. Pasta with beef, Chick pea stew and Chicken with sausages.
Image

next we have 3 packs of biscuits, 2 salty ones and 1 sweet and a chocolate cake.
Image

we have a moist wipe and a package of paper tissues
Image

the rest comes in 3 bags. One for drinks, one for sugar, salt and other spices and one for the snacks.
Image

the bag with snacks contains Cheese spread, Strawberry Jam, Muesli, Chewing gums, a Jelly bar, a Chocolate bar and a bag of toffee flavored candy. The bag with the muesli is a little bit bloated. Don't know what that means?
Image

this are the drinks. Two coffee, 2 tea bags, 1 chocolate, 1 instant soup, 3 coffee whiteners, 2 isotonic drinks, 2 protein drink and 1 orange flavored drink
Image

this is the last bag. We have 8 packs of sugar, 1 salt and 1 pepper, 1 pouch of ketchup and 1 pouch of mexican style sauce.
Image

the first look at the items tell me that most of the food has a Best Befor Date in 2019 or in late 2018. There were only a few items that were over its date. For example the muesli and the cheese. So i think i have to use my sense of smell on these items.
I don't know if it's worth to mention, i have a friend of mine who serves at german bundeswehr as a Master Sergant. He was stationed in Mali with the german Bundeswehr for some months, taking part at the UN mission MINUSMA. After getting home he told me that he got some UN Combat rations there while he was on patrol. He mentioned that he got the UN Combat rations in brown bags and that they were halal.

Enough for the moment. Update tomorrow starting with breakfast

yes, this is the same ration I've had and I bought it for a similar price.
I agree with carlos that this is special ways of packaging like chips, nothing's wrong about it

I think they packed the muesli under protective gas atmosphere. Thas why it's bloated. This morning i started with breakfast. Get me the muesli in a bowl with some milk. Made me a cup of coffee with some sugar and whitener and a cup of tea with some sugar. Also get me a pack of salty biscuits and sweet biscuits. Also get me a toffee flavored candy on the trey.

Image
First i started with the muesli. It had some oatmeal flakes, some raisins, some banana chips and something i could not identfy at first, but after looking at the packaging it was identified as coconut chips. The muesli tasted very good and flavorful. To bad that it was only so little . Could have been more.
I put some cheese spread on a salty biscuit ans some strawberryjam on the sweet biscuit. The cheese spread tasted very salty. Way too salty. Next i tried some salty biscuit on it's own and it does not taste salty at all.
Image

Then i tried a sweet biscuit with some strawberry jam. It tasted and smells like strawberry but it has a light artificial taste in the end. Kind of weired and for my opinion it was a bit to fluid for a jam.
Image
The good thing about the biscuits is that they don't have any artificial taste.

The coffee and tea were both good. Although i'm not a coffee guy i can say that it tasted good, not to bitter and not weak. The tea was a very pleasant and flavorful black tea. Just the way i like it. After finishing breakfast i took one of those toffee flavored candys. It taste like the "Werther's Original" candys.

Could you check the envelopes and see if they have been manufactured by JOMIPSA? Some of the items look a lot like JOMIPSA stuff and the Tejedor bisquits are the same as the pan de galleta in the spanish rats... Maybe it's a spanish ration in disguise

Hi Carlos, checked the pouches. So far i can tell you that nearly everything is manufactured by JOMIPSA.

Today was Lunchtime. For Lunch in choosed to eat Pasta with beef, Chick Pea Stew, some left over biscuits from the breakfast and for desert i tried the chocolade cake. I choosed to have the instant orange drink and the hot chocolate as drinks.

Image

the first impression of the pasta with beef, it looked very good. The beef chunks were very tender and they looked a little bit red inside. The pasta had a nice bite, but it tasted like nothing. So i had to spice it up with some ketchup and some salt to get even a taste on it. Unfortunally i did not make a picture of the ketchup, all i can say is that it looked very dark but it had a ritch taste of tomatos.
Image

the chick peas stew was the complete opposite when it comes to the taste. It didn't need any spices at all. Tasted really good. beside the chick peas it had some carrots, green beans and some red paprika
Image

The orange drink and the hot chocolate, oh man, never ever had such a bad drinks in a ration. The orange drink was very arificial and the powder doesn't mix really up with the water after stir it for a few times. The hot chocolate tasted like water. I gave the right amount of water in my cup with the powder, stir it up several times but it still had no real taste of chocolate.
Image

Desert was the chocalte cake. At least the chocolate cake has tasted like a chocolate cake should taste. It was a little moist inside and had quite a good bite.

Hi,
little update on my review. Yesterday i had the last meal of the UN ration. It was the Chicken sausages with vegetables and the Instant soup. For drink i choosed to have an high fibre isotonic drink. Unfortunately i somehow deleted the pictures i made. SO there are no pictures of the last meal.

The Sausages with vegetables tasted good. to me it was more like a stew. There were some green peas, some carrots and some little wiener sausages in the stew. Everything was well done and the sausages had a nice bite.
The soup was not that pleasant. I mixed the instant soup with 250 ml of water but it did not mix up at all. There were some little lumps left. There was nearly no taste in the soup. At last i tasted the high fibre isotonic drink. The powder smells a bit like a lemon drink and the drink it self was more like Gatorade with a very artificial taste in the end. For desert i picked up the little chocolate bar. Somehow the chocolate must have gotten some heat, it was molten and broken and it had began to oxidize. But it tasted good.

All in all my conclusion of this ration, i could not recommend it. It had it's highs and it's lows. On one side the food was good. Some things had to be spiced up, everything was edible. It was Ok for me. On the other side there were the drinks. Except the tea, everything else was not very pleasant. Most of the drinks had a very artificial taste taste like nothing and didn't mix up very well.
