TTI

Post by housil »

Since kman´s http://www.mreinfo.com/mre-longevity.html, we all know what the time temperature indicator (TTI) ist for.

We got a couple of boxes:

and had to discover that:

At 8 of 10 boxes, the TTI had turned dark.

So Rudi and me tryed some MRE´s to figure out, if they are bad or still edible.

Here is my result...

I opend the box:

Everything seemed in perfect shape.

I decided for No. 19, Beef with Mushrooms (my thought, they will go bad first)

Image

All packages were still OK, non was leaking or "ballooned"

The crackers are still in good color and shape:

no suspiciuos smell or taste.

I opend the entree and the rice and our family own food inspector appeared immediately...

So I deceided, I will try it.

Also nothing abnormal, color - smell - taste OK

(Don´t complain about the plates (sweet) pattern - I´m the only male in a 4 person household... )

How are your experiences with darkend TTI´s or spoiled ration´s?

Are there any idea´s how long it will take to change the TTI´s color?
Will it turn dark if you "forgot" a box in the sun for "a couple of minutes" or will it take day´s or weeks at 100F to change a TTI?

Great pictures and experiment! I just love it when forum members experiment on themselves with MREs...it makes me feel like I'm not alone. :-)

As for those TTIs, I would think that the cheese spread and/or any fruit would go back the fastest because of heat. Did you check out any of those packages?

I liked that picture of your dog. It reminds me of this weekend when I was trying a British ration. I opened up the little can of "Beef Pate" and about 2 seconds later, two cats appeared at my feet looking up at me like it was dinner time.

Hi kman,

the ccc i tried on sunday was also out off on of these boxes.

i tried the cheese spread and it tasted like all the others cheese i´ve eaten before.

also the toaster pastery with apple filling was very delicious.

only the m&m inside were broken, but here was the problem, that the bag of the m&m was not packed in the rigth way.

bye

Experiment?!?!

I was just hungry... (kidding)
There was neither cheese nor fruit with No 19. only Blackberry jam and I think this should be dark

I´m a little bit concerned that your cats like brit. food. Nobody does, not even the british. Therefore there are so many italian, chinese, greek, lebanese, indian, McDoxxxxx, Buger Kxxxx, a.s.o. cuisine in GB...

But cats also like mice - I don´t...
