Question about Russians IRP item.

Post by fatoutdoors » Sun Jun 25, 2017 10:55 am

So I recently reviewed menu 1 for a Russian IRP and and found an unusual item in it that really know nothing about.

My translate app called it caviar of zucchini but it was a small container of red sauce? About the consistency of baby food with extra oil floating on it. I heated it up and it smelled and tasted pretty much like a version of the canned sauce you find in chef boyardee products. I tried it on it own but it worked best mixed in with the stew that came as the main. Anyone know any thing about this and if I was even close to the proper use of it?? Here is a photo of the label.

It's sort of like a spread. Russians eat it with a piece of bread or put it on a cracker. It's not suppose to be heated or added to a main meal.
This type of spread is very popular in Russia, and it comes in many different flavors. For instance,

Mixed vegetables

Eggplant

Hope that helps.

I've seen it referred to several ways: vegetable spread, vegetable pate, vegetable puree, etc. I'm not sure how they use it, but it's essentially what Sniiper said.

It's very common in a number of different rations.

I have no idea how its suppose to be used but I like to heat it up, add salt and pepper and dip my crackers in it.

That's how I like it, dipping the crackers in it. :)

That's what I like about rations. Take what you have and mix it up how you like and enjoy.

That's very true! It is kind of neat, since it forces us to experiment when we don't always know the intended purpose of a ration item.

Exactly, I think I accidentally ate powdered milk as a soup in my first IRP. It wasn't bad with a little salt and pepper.
