As said in the title, what would be the preferred way to heat/prepare one of the large tray rations without the heating unit the army would have ?

Well, if the tray is metal, you can put it in the oven - after first opening one end of the tray, or punching small holes in the top of the tray - at about 350 degrees for 15-30 minutes.
If the tray is plastic * you CANNOT heat it in the oven*;
1. You can submerge the whole tray in boiling water for about 35-40 minutes.
2. You can empty the contents into a oven safe container then bake at 350 degrees for about 15-30 minutes.
3. You can empty the contents into a large pan and heat on the stove top.
4. You can empty a small amount of contents into a microwave safe bowl and microwave a single serving.
.... and so on,I think you get the gist!

I agree with cavguy,
you could have heated the metal trays e.g. in a fire. But in 2002 (?) they changed to polymer trys so anything except cakes I wouldn´t eat out of metal try by now.
As I don´t have a tray heater (hot water) from a MKT, I pour the content from the trays into a pot and heat them on a stove.

Yeah I think I will just have to empty onto a large pan and cook/ heat that way as I want to be able to heat it In a remote place and a pot to big enough submerge them in would be rather huge and hard to heat.

Housil, I figured the UGR eggs out. I posted a review in the Other US Rations section. They came out perfect.
