This is the last 1996 MRE I'll review - I'm saving the 4th - Menu 10, the Chili with Macaroni - as a collectible.
The menu:
Pork Chow Mein
Chow Mein Noodles
Choc Covered Cookie
Peanut Butter
Candy (3)
Beverage Base w/sugar
Packet A - coffee
cream sub
sugar
salt
gum
matches
tissue
towelette
The creamer had hardened, and in what I'm noting is a running trend among 20-21 year old rations, the Tabasco bottle was intact, but the sauce had darkened.
The beverage base this time was lemon-lime. I opened it in the hopes of trying it, but it was clumpy and clearly discolored, so I decided against it.
The crackers and peanut butter didn't let me down, however. The crackers still had the slightly rancid taste, but it wasn't too strong to spoil my enjoyment of the peanut butter.
1996 Menu 9 - Pork Chow Mein
Re: 1996 Menu 9 - Pork Chow Mein
Like the pound cake, I was stoked to try the chocolate covered cookie. It looked and smelled great. Too bad it didn't taste great. I think the oils in the chocolate went rancid or something. I was actually forced to spit this out.
And finally the chow mein itself.
It smelled and looked ok although looks can be subjective. I tried a bite and it tasted ok, but stopped there preferring not to press my luck.
The coffee was fine as well. Apparently I got a bonus of M&Ms, which wasn't on the menu, but it wasn't such a bonus. As you can see from the pictures in the first post, the M&Ms had crumbled apart.
Overall, I was surprised that any of the components were edible in these 3, 20+ year-old MREs. The peanut butter in particular was very good. I also tried the gum in all three - it took a little softening in my mouth before chewing, and the flavor didn't last very long, but 20 year old gum is 20 year old gum.
And in addition, I continue to add to my stockpile of towelettes, toilet paper, and matches. Hey, that stockpile just may save my life one day
