Yesterday Mrs Housil opened a pouch of 2011 vegetable crackers.
First we noticed a nasty smell and the crackers looked like this
Date code 1134
No idea what these "stains" are

Smart move, Housil - I don't think I would have gone for trying one of those.. but then again.. maybe I'd have to have just one bite.
Seriously though, when something isn't passing the first two of three steps (Visual, Smell, Taste - in that order too) of freshness, it is very wise to just toss it!
Scary looking crackers I must say.. what the heck happened, I wonder!?
Actually - upon further examination, my theory is first off.. those dark red blobs are the dried red bell peppers they add to the crackers making them "vegetable" - and what must have happened was, there was a small pinhole in the pack, moisture got in, rancidity festered, and then out came your unfortunate crackers. Tragic!
OR, it could have been a bad batch of those things - maybe there are others from that specific lot/year that have the same issue. Just another theory!

It happened with a wheat snack bread in one of my MRE's. That was much worse though- half covered in mold.

The bits of vegetables in the crackers seem much larger than normal - maybe something screwed up with mincing the peppers and some larger chunks got into a batch. The larger chunks probably had a good deal more moisture in them than the tiny bits would have, and with no desiccant in the pouch the moisture helped the crackers turn. Best guess I've got - thanks for sharing housil!

This proves that the WSB *is* actually food. I've been using them for packing material for years....

Right? "Hmm.... oh. Oh man... this is terrible. Ok, I'm done with that. No, maybe just one more bite. Ack..."
