Chinese PLA Type 09: Menu 1

Post by DispAtch »

Pictured below was our first Chinese PLA and it was an interesting one, enjoyable in its own right, too.

Orange Drink (Prep.)
Image
Orange Drink - A little more tang and a different flavor than some of the US Rations.
Image
Cereal Bars (Wrapped)
Image
Cereal Bars (UnWrapped) - Hard bars, and highly dense. Only a subtle flavor is present. Definitely the main source of carbs.
Image
Spicy Potherb Mustard - Leaves a burn on your tongue...Reminds me of Oriental Seaweed.
Image
Egg Roll Stuffed /w Minced Beef - Remember when you were a kid and wanted to eat the cookie dough; It has that appeal to the dough part - you'll crave to eat it, but it doesn't satisfy your taste buds. Instead it leaves a subtle Wanton // Egg-Roll type flavor. The Minced Beef reminds me of a spam-like-meat, but it was not intolerable. I wish there was a heater and salt.

We can wait to try a Chinese Type 13 Combat Ration next!

Great review and welcome to the forum. Your photos were outstanding.

.
Your SPAM type egg roll/dumping looked better than the one I tried. The swirls give it a appealing look. I also thought it was not that bad.
Did you think the sea weed mustard had a bit of vinegar in the pouch?

I wonder why there is no rice of soft noddle pouch, Or no tea and sugar?

I tried compressed bars and thought they were very filling. In fact I kept one in my canoe bag for emergency use
For a supplement or emergency food source it is outstanding. ( don't know the nutritional value but It seems filling) If you went hiking on the AT and had a few of those stashed away you would have piece of mind. The next one I get I am going to try it with hot water as a porridge.

Great pics and review! Too bad the cereal bars does not have a taste to it, like lemon or orange or something...

There are civilian emergency food bars on sale in America which are similar I think, it would be interesting to compare them with these.

This PLA ration type is the FSR/D-ration equivalent as opposed to the MRE-equivalent with chem-heaters. Hence the reliance on the compressed bars rather than rice and noodles.

I've had the mainstay bars and would say they're similar in density and nutrients. The US bars tend to be lemon flavored by default, whereas the PLA bars are more of a general cereal flavor. They're slightly sweet, and would probably go well crumbled up with some milk. In an emergency you could crumble them, add a little water, and add coffee creamer packets from MRE or other ration accessory packs. I have a packed bar loose by itself somewhere - will have to try that.
