Sausage Gravy and Au Gratin potatoes

Post by Norton » Sun Dec 28, 2014 11:38 am

Same trip I made breakfast

I had the Sausage and gravy mixed with Au Gratin potatoes and a packet of Army Salsa.
First I will say the sausage gravy is a welcome meal in the winter. Most of the time I use this with the Stop Sign Biscuits
Tried it on MRE Corn bread, but the Army's corn bread is way to sweet
My plan was to use a packet of Bacon flavor Cheese on the potatoes at breakfast.
But I got hungry and ate the cheese as a snack on a Army Biscuit
It did not matter as Au Gratin were swimming in thick cheese, and I added the packet of Salsa
The salsa was a thick dark red brown sauce, more of a bottled low heat hot sauce.
It looked like it was going to be hot, but was very mild in reality.
No visible pieces of tomato or pepper. Flavor similar to civilian Texas Pete or Juanita's hot sauce in Heat
The Sausage gravy had lots of big pieces of sausage, in white pasty gravy. It needed more pepper.
But it was salty.
Mixed together it all blended very well, you could have had this for dinner and been satisfied.

For desert I heated the sweet cornbread and covered it with heated U.S. issue pears. The result was much like what is called a cobbler.
Same thing again, maybe not a orthodox use, but in my opinion a good desert after the salty sausage gravy and potatoes

Mix and match is what it's all about with MREs.
