Thai Chicken Horror.

Post by Demoncase » Mon May 22, 2006 6:09 am

Ok then chaps....A few weeks ago I pulled a Thai Chicken from a lovely fresh crate of 2005 MREs and toddled off to play airsoft for the day.

Come lunch time I slit open my brick of nosh to find that at some point, not long after manufacture, the Thai Chicken meal pouch had burst and filled the entire container with watery slime.....which had gone mouldy.  I washed the outside of the bread and jalpeno cheese spread packed and ate them (when I got my appetite back after retching for 5 minutes) but everything else was a dead loss.

for 3 hours afterwards the entire rest area (a 50foot by 20 foot open area with a thin plastic roof) was filled with the cloying smell not unlike baby sick but 1000 times stronger- REALLY really not good...like death and decay.

While this isn't especially note-worthy it's the 3rd seperate occasion where myself and close friends have opened a Thai Chicken to find it's exploded and gone rancid.....All the rest of the case are perfect. Perhaps the Thai sauce is specially acidic and rots the retort?

Anyone else had issues with this rogue meal?

:) Maybe Mr. Crearso sat on the meal, and the entree burst open inside the bag, or case, or maybe the case was thrown out of a Blackhawk higher than 120 meters?

Wow, that sounds pretty disgusting - too bad you didn't get any pictures to share with us. :-)

I seem to have been hearing more and more stories lately of exploded MRE entrees. Maybe it's a new trend or maybe MREs are just getting more popular and the stories (which have always been out there) are starting to get told to other people.

Maybe DangerousDave is right and the MRE was just mis-stored or mishandled. Or maybe it was a manufacturing defect. I hope you had something else available for lunch!

I looked over the outer crate and the inner too and could find no clear evidence of 'crumpling' or damage from being punted out of helo/sat on by a lard-arse/run over by a Humvee.

As for pictures....without smell-o-vision it would not have conveyed the true gut churning horror of the situation.

bad mres

Post by norge » Sat May 27, 2006 7:16 am

have seen this problem before a couple of times, specialy
the dark brown mres even the canadian imp had a few
bad ones. the canadian army told me the frezeing was the
problem, they burst open in the seams and leak when
thawed. and another thing if you have a bad mre
do not clean and eat the other parts, they contain toxic
germs and mold that can make you extreme sick.
talked to a medical about the food germs he told me this info.
no fun to get a bad case of running as.......

I'm fairly certain that since it was several weeks ago the danger has passed of food poisioning from eating the extra bits.

It's good advice all the same.

I just find it bizarre that this Entree out of 12 in the crate was the only one to have gone rotten.
