Non-MRE Rations

I wonder how many people would like to see other types of rations -- besides the MRE, TOTM, HDR, etc. ("meals") -- documented on this site.

Example:
FOOD PACKET, SURVIVAL, ABANDON SHIP
or
SURVIVAL, GENERAL PURPOSE, IMPROVED

These are, of course, rations; however, they are not "meals".

I've always planned to eventually have sections for those types of rations up on the site. It's just been a matter of time seeing as I'm so backed up on getting all the other countries' rations pages online.

The one thing that helps gets these pages up faster is when I actually have a lot of pictures and information about these things. While I do have some samples of the GPI survival ration, I don't have much info on the abandon ship rations.

Although I've known about many of these rations, it wasn't until someone put up a case of "abandon ship" rations on eBay (with a nice picture, BTW) that I thought about mentioning inclusion on this site.

My first thought when I looked at that auction was "Charms?! You mean 'Charms' are considered a survival ration!?". From that picture, I can see a few packs of charms and a couple of other little things. Wow...I guess it's better than nothing - but living off candy for days on end couldn't be fun. Guess it beats eating your boat-mates, though.

I did check out the DSCP page for the current Abandon Ship rations and it looks like they're using the standard Datrex/Mainstay bars now:

Yup, I have a few survival packages from when my company laid everyone off. They gave us all the stuff in the office, office supplies etc. and they had stacks and stacks of these disaster kits. Each kit has a 3 day/1person Mainstay bar along with packs of water, first aid, whistle, etc.

I also have a few of the large size Mainstay in my survivalist kits. Not fancy, but it will keep you alive as long as you have water to go with it.

Actually...they've been using Charms (or similar hard candies) in aircraft survival kits for decades. The current spec is called:
"Survival, Aircraft, Life Raft"
and here's what it's designed to provide:

"Each packet provides approximately 300 kilocalories (100% carbohydrate). It is strictly short-term survival food whose consumption will help to minimize the negative metabolic effects of acute starvation."

As for those Mainstay bars...

I've got 20 cases (of ten packages) of Mainstay bars in our supplies container at work. Yum!

Plus several similar bars which have passed expiration around here somewhere.
