Do you know the backstory for that skit?jfko6 wrote:From the archives of Saturday Night Live (SNL)

The skit was written about a greasy spoon restaurant in Chicago where a lot of the cast members went after shows and rehearsals at Second City - the story is that the skit is no exaggeration - but a blow-by-blow of a typical visit.
Sometimes funny is real I guess.

If I remember this right it was the Billy Goat Tavern - and I think the owner guy is still there a couple days a week and you can hear him do that speal but his kids run the place now.

If memory serves [correctly], I saw this live; .i.e., when it was aired. There was a shorter delay in broadcasting, or none at all. The only thing I looked up was the date in the 70's. It was Season 3, 1978.
Memory of the skit [at that precise time] was that it was based on an actual restaurant in Chicago, and that's all they served: cheeseburger, chips, pepsi.
It's one of the earlier memorable SNL skits along with the classic Blues Brothers and Cone Heads then Eddie Murphy's Mr. Robinson's neighborhood.
Probably the most iconic skit was John Belushi's role as Captain Kirk and his parody of Star Trek. You can see that through an NBC site or app, not likely to be available on YouTube.

What a classic! I don't think I saw this when it aired, but it became etched in my mind when old SNL episodes were repackaged and put into syndication in the 80s. In 2000 my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I traveled to Chicago for a wedding. While there we walked all around the downtown area, saw a Cubs game at Wrigley (Sammy Sosa hit a homerun!) and, one of the biggest highlights was going to the Billy Goat Tavern! It was very cool to go to the actual inspiration for "Cheezeboiger, cheezeboiger, cheezeboiger"! And it really was, indeed, a lot like the old skit! Definitely a highlight of the trip.

That was a nice story. The Cubs came to Shea Stadium now Citi Field [Citibank} and demolished the Mets late 70's early 80's. The Cubs threw them into a triple play. Most, if not all the Mets games I went to they lost. I was in the stadium.
