Sandwich, Shelf Stable : Bacon Cheddar and Beef Patty

Post by BigMark » Thu Jun 11, 2009 10:19 pm

I actually really enjoyed this "hotpocket", but I ate it cold for breakfast, and I wonder if that was what set it apart for me from what I read that everyone else got from it. The bacon wasn't crunchy or anything, but since it wasn't hot, I didn't have any problems with it pulling and it sort of "snapped" when I bit it which to me was nice. I also liked the amount of bacon, and the fact that it was identifiable as bacon. The cheese flavor seemed noticeable, and really for breakfast, I'd eat it again given the current state of what's available for MREs breakfast wise, usually I just save dessert for breakfast. ;) A little greasy but 7/10 considering.

The Beef Patty was probably one of my favorite MREs I've never tried before. It was like what a bacon cheeseburger in a bag should be. I ate it open faced since I'm not the hugest fan of the WSB and figured that two pieces would be overwhelming, if they could get a more hamburger bun involved, I'd be in MRE heaven. It was super salty since I covered it in cheese spread, but I was hiking so that was something I was really into at the time. The BBQ sauce didn't seem 100% necessary, but it was nice to change up the flavor on some bites. If I were a soldier in the field, I'd be a happy camper if I got to eat one of these as it's a relatively close facsimile compared to what most of the things they try to sell you are supposed to be. For me personally, if I were to pick something I wanted to eat time and time again, this would be it, definitely in the top 5 MREs I've ever eaten. 9.5/10.

Sorry no pics, the hotpocket I ate while driving last weekend to Port Aransas, which was perfect driving food, and the Beef Patty I was just too tired to bother.

You know, they're passing more and more laws that ban email and texting while driving. But they don't have any laws against taking pictures of MREs while driving!

Let me tell you...I was wishing for one of those FSR sandwiches today. I was stuck at work during lunch and couldn't get away for any food. I kept looking down at my computer bag thinking, "Why oh why didn't I put an FSR sandwich in there for 'just in case'?"

kman...they do come handy. The other day I was on a teacher's training @ my school. At lunch time everybody went to eat out and when I check i was low on funds so I simply went to my truck and reached under the seat of my extra cab for my emergency kit . I usually have an MRE or two stashed with other things in a MOLLE II sustaimnent pouch.
It was a menu #7 Chicken with salsa, not my favorite but it was better than having no lunch. Some of my coworkers looked at me weird except the USMCJROTC instructor of my school... That saved my lunch.
At the end of the training he came back and gave me some extra MRE's and goodies he had. They keep couple of cases in their JROTC classroom to show them to the cadets.

That's the good thing of always been prepared.
Peace!

Well, in fairness to myself, I do keep a healthy supply of MREs and other rations parts in my car...but that would have involved me actually leaving my desk. :-)

Yeah, I keep a few MREs in my trunk, but right now since it's summer they're prime/favorite MREs since I'm gonna have to eat them soon, but that's not a bad idea just to stick a FSRwich in my bag. I'll have to try the Italian one soon, I've had the BBQ one many times; I got 24 of them before they were ever available probably 3 years ago now.. I know I posted about that on here.. some lady emailed me after I won it on ebay and told me I ruined her kids vacation or something because I sniped the auction. She had already won at least a 12 pack of them anyway.

I love the chicken with salsa, but it was certainly not what I expected when I opened it, I expected the chicken breast in sauce, not those little shredded pieces.

I think I'll have an MRE for dinner since the wife is out tonight and I'll post a review w/ pix tomorrow.

For your next one, as time permits, try it heating it in a pan of water, might just be enough to make it a 7.5
