Yes, it can be done and you are right it will be slower if you are trying to heat water or rations. Like I mentioned before the cable-ing and pin connections are the biggest problem. I am dealing with the thought of trying to "jury rig" something together where the pin connectors fit on the front face of the heater and something can be plugged into a cigarette lighter. That way I won't have to fasten something directly to the batteries. I hope that helps....

They are both intended to run off 24V. I understand this part but dont have a 24v system.

I have confirmed that the older (housils) version can run off of 12v. It just heats a little slower but plenty hot.

The newer one i was told by several users that it wont work at all on 12v.

Treesuit says it will so i may just have to pick one up and test it

Worst case ill put it in my kitchen as the new coffee pot running off an inverter

My "older" one has just a resist wire inside that´s heats up when ever connected to any electrical source.

The newer one (called RAK 15) has a built-in intelligent sensor that turn off the whole device to protect the power source
when the source is <22V so you are right, it will not work at 12V.

I'm sorry I was not more clear. I have not tested my heater at all since I received it with my jeep. I have seen the Youtube video and that's it. My jeep is currently under restoration and in several pieces.

Well getting the topic back on track..does anyone use a hatchet or axe in their kit or vehicle. If so, does it come in handy? Or is it rather useless. A hatchet I could see if your have it lashed to your BOB/rucksack/backpack/Etc. It could come in handy for chopping wood, kindling, pounding things and so forth. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a good one that doesn't cost a fortune.

Not yet, but if I´ll get me one like this:

not because it´s so a great gadget but it´s genuine German Army. It´s 2lbs of weight and you can even pull out nails with it.
