I found this vid showing what the gentleman says is a Phil Mess Kit that is square. Looks a lot more usefull than the USGI one which I only ever used (because we had to) in Basic Training. Personally my favorite Messkit is the French 3 piece version because it is so versatile. My close runner up is the Dutch stainless steel mess kit modeled after the British version.

That mess kit looks like a french ww2 mess kit "La Gamelle"

Tried lots of foreign rations from Europe and Northern America. Want to try Asian and South American rations

Just noticed, nobody has mentioned yet the three markings on the German messkit:

each one indicates 500ml (~17 oz)
