Yes very interesting pics everyone. biscuits, do you work in the medical field in the UK? You sound like you know what you're talking about as to that photo, and I agree although nasty looking and painful, the wounds really are not life-threatening. Actually I'd be more concerned with possible adverse side effects from meds and post-op infection. As for the Spetsnaz blade launcher, I do find it interesting that no other nation has elected to develop a copy that I know of.

I really, reaaally doubt that. It's spring powered, so it can't be that effective. Simple as that.

The RUSSIAN explenation is better. The knife is designed for a "stand off" situation, where the opponent is unarmed or armed with a melee weapon. The launcher is a surprise attack, because they do not know it's more then a knife. It's for kills in the 2-5 meter (!!) range. (Btw.. imagine aiming a knife launcher over 60 yards without sights..)

They are capable of penetrating kevlar vests. This seems a bit unlogical, because those stop bullets. But, kevlar vests are also especially mentioned not to be stab vests.

The idea behind this? Kevlar are fibers with a high pull strength. They can litterally "catch" bullets in it's woven web. However, the fibers are easily cut. So a pointy, sharp object simply slices through fibers. For anti stab purpose you have special inlays with other woven materials or plates.

I have read that some of those kniVes used a small charge of a .22 or larger caliber in order to propel the blade at farther distances. There's even a type of spetsnaz knife that was used as a single shot weapon, the NRS-2.

Looks like it uses a Nagant blank cartridge...
Even so, the range would be short, and aiming pretty hard!

I know only one side is necessary since typically only one side is sharpened but if you decided to sharpen that false edge, having an upper guard would definitely be wise.

Depends on use. I don't think it's a good idea to sharpen the false edge, because it's curvy and have no utility purpose. I'm looking for a Glock 81 survival knife, to replace my old Mora Clipper, which I forget in the Cracker's small backpack and was confiscated on airport when he departed Romania.

Actually, I don't remember using my KBar more than a few times, I have always in my pocket an Victorinox Huntsman, my SOG EOD multitool on my hip and an SOG Seal Revolver in the backpack. I think I'll order a new sheath for it, because the original SOG sheat suck big time, is one of these good ideas that don't work.

I do agree that I find seldom uses for it. Mainly because it is after all a fighting knife as it's main purpose. I hardly ever do things like slice open boxes or even do small tasks with it when I have an available pocket knife.

Even with "fighting", you rarely use the false side (or the sharpened). It's more for slicing then for fighting.
But on fighting knifes it's more just to not have to think which side you are using.

It's more usefull on hunting knifes in my humble opinion. Most modern fighting knifes also don't use the double edge anymore.
