That why we are "forced" to drive economic cars with small engines (1.1 or 1.3 liters cubic capacity and ~ 75 - 100 hps) everything "bigger" you have to pay a "penatly tax" for wasting gas unnecessary.
Driving "big" car´s over here make peoples looking at you as you are a criminal but my brand new BMW X3 has a gas consumption of 8 liter per 100km at Euro 4 exhaust regulation (euro crap). Such an old, small car with a 1.1 toy engine has a similar consumption but will cause much more exhaust.

So they sell stickers to us for the wind screen in traffic light colors, depending to the exhaust. With a yellow or red sticker you can´t enter downtown a city. So the little craftsman (plumber, carpenter, deliverer...) can´t use their old trucks anymore and have to buy new trucks - or loosing their job, business and income. That´s our own "social" government

They took it ("Normal") out of business - not enough profit anymore and replaced it with (much more expansive) "vpower", "Ultimate 100 " brands...

My Iltis would take "normal" (92 oct), now I have to take "super" (98 oct) unnecessary.
My BMW runs with all kinds down from 92 oct up to 100 with it smart engine managment system - but yes, I´m an enviroment murder driving such a car...

Always thought that the Iltis was a diesel...
I like those little cars though, because of the rollbar and stuff like that.. but they cost to much around here..

Stef: I've only driven on the left once in France but in a British the Car so RHD in the LHD country.... It wasn't easy I was on the wrong side for everything, toll stations, car park payment machines, drive through burger bars, road junctions .

In the UK we have car tax too, mine is £62.50 for 6 months or £125 for the year but thats depends on your car. Plus tax on Petrol/gas I get screwed 2 ways with my car by the government

So if you have a large 4x4 New Land Rover/Range Rover or BWM you could pay quite a lot.

I'm not too sure what the octane is in the UK, its not really well displayed, I think its 95 and 98,with 102 too (EXPENSIVE!!!) I did full up on 102 once, cost me a fortune, nearly 9p more a litre (regular was it £1.25 a litre then too ) my fault I wasn't paying attention at the pump, could have been worse it could have been diesel Though my car did run very nicely on it.


My KA its very reliable, tyres, oil, brake pads and a new exhaust I think thats I'll the work I've had done to it in 2 years.

100 62 (60MPH the class of road under a motorway, *A* road we designated them as eg A470 A485)
120 75 (70MPH is Motorway limit)
If you see a road sign telling you to go slower you do, theres normally a reason for them to slow down traffic, not that people do though.

In California, we pay the highest gas tax in the USA, $0.64 per gallon.
Thats about 21 % tax total.
But I pay:
~ 30% income tax to the Government
~ 9% income tax to the state
~10% tax when I buy everything except food
~ 1% property tax
~ $ 800 usd for the truck licence and 'Road Fees' per year
So I'm paying about 50% tax on my income.
If we go to socialized medicine, I expect that to go up to 70-80% taxes...

Nope. Only the last bunch were turbo diesels, all other benziner.

That´s a "normal" price for em.
My one (1986) , after fixing, painting etc. at a very special Iltis dealer €8000 Depends to the condition. A €3000 Iltis is close to trash - a €6500 is a pretty good one.

I know someone with a Iltis, but it was one from the brandweer (feuerwehr/ fire dep.) it's a funny car.. but paying €8000 for a car from 1986 is a bit to much for me it's probably like new (revised etc) but i'd prefer to buy a newer car then.. you can buy very nice other cars in that price range

Here the gas is 81(normal),89(premium) and 93(super premium).I think they have 95 but is rare.Also now they have it mixed with ethanol; E85.The majority of the cars run with 89 because is cheaper.
The price of gas right now is $ 2,27 a gallon ,here in Oklahoma.

housil, yes people like the BMW's and Mercedes until they breakdown and have to dish a lot of money for their repairs $$$$$$$$....ouch!
The only reliable vehicles here are the pickup trucks ans some SUV's.Smaller american cars are not good...yet. American culture is ised to big cars and gas guzzlers (muscle cars).
Europa is more to small economy cars....

Many people don't like to pay taxes but like to live from the goverment benefits....
I don't mind paying taxes, IF the goverment makes things a little easier on us that have to work for a living....

One thing.. we pay aloooot more taxes and stuff like that..
But we don't have highways with old tarmac (??) asphalt in the Netherlands.
All of it is modern ZOAB (with little holes.. that lets the water through, so no aquaplaning etc) lots of roadsigning, much more then in surrounding countries like belgium and germany (you can't really get lost in the Netherlands)

And all roads are pretty safe, and easy to navigate.
All highway exits are very easy (not those sharp turns that you have to take with 50km/h like in Germany)

But..

we pay most tax for cars
we pay additional tax when buying foreign cars to protect the dutch automobil industry (But DAF doesn't make cars anymore.. so it's useless.. and only a govermental milk cow)
we pay most tax over fuel
insurance is more expensive then most countries (only Germany and Scandinavia keeps up)
etc etc etc..

In 1902, Germany´s Emperor Wilhelm 2nd intended the "champagne/sparkling wine tax" to improve Germanys Imperial Navy (for WW1).

Now it´s 2009. We don´t have an Imperial Navy anymore, nor a World War or an Emperor but guess what we still have
