no, its more like a boullionwürfel, suppenwürfel (sorry dont know english word) with a neutral salty taste of old fat... its also not total dry like crackers, there is some water in it, maybe soaked out of the air over the years...

VEB is for "Volkseigener Betrieb" (=people owend company), a typical comunistic term in the former DDR (GDR=German Democratic Republic or "East Germany" for short) for a state-owend company.
Has nothing to do with military...

Privat property was proscribed in the DDR as "privat property" is a typical, capitalistic, western thing.

Every company, farm (were called LPG = landwirtschaftliche Produktionsgenossenschaft = agrarian production companionship) was property of the state

Yes, they're called bullion or boullion (both spellings are used) cubes over here as well. It's primarily composed of salt and artificial flavors, along with a little fat from the chicken or beef.

There is a product that is called "soup base" that is primarily used in the food service industry, that is based with meat as the primary ingredient (chicken or beef) and then a lot of salt. It is becoming more available in grocery stores now, but as you might guess, they cost much more than the boullion cubes.

Odd that those crackers/biscuits would get so salty over the years.
